By Carla Long Sleeve Bib and Splash Mat

We have recently been sent a By Carla Bib and Splash Mat to review.

By Carla is a range of products launched in 2009, which includes products for use throughout pregnancy and with babies and toddlers. These stylish and contemporary products include:

  • support pillows
  • blankets
  • changing mats
  • sleeping bags
  • bed protectors

The product which interested us was the waterproof bib and splash mat. Now it just so happens that The Boy is actually quite a tidy eater; he's never really been one to smear his food everywhere, something that my father has often commented on. He (The Boy, not my dad) tends not to miss his mouth, doesn't like dirty fingers and asks to be cleaned if he does get a little mucky (unlike his grandad).

However he does like his craft activities, including painting, water play and cooking. Therefore we decided to test the bib and splashmat out in these situations, as well as at tea-time, which just goes to show the versatility of them.

As you can see he's been kept clean and dry throughout, which makes me happy (less washing) and him happy (not mucky). The splash-mat we used under the easel to save the floor.

There are two other really good features about this bib; there is a fold under crumb catcher (brilliant for younger babies who sometimes miss) and because it's waterproof it can go straight into the sink and be washed up like the dishes! Excellent!

Competition:

I have a By Carla Bib and Splash Mat Set (worth £12.99) in either nougat or playtime to give away to one lucky reader.

To enter please do the following things:

I've entered to win a @ByCarla_uk bib on @TheBoyandMe's blog https://www.theboyandme.co.uk/?p=2106

  • Leave one comment below to tell me that you've done both

For an extra entry please 'Like' By Carla on Facebook. You'll need to leave a separate comment to tell me that you've done that one.

Review: MyCarryPotty

I'm putting it off, I really am.

It might not be fair, some might call me cruel but I consider it more unfair to him to start and stop and for it to go wrong. And you know what they say; once you start there is no going back!

I am talking about potty-training. I blogged about it last weekend, discussing how I know he's ready. A further development to that is the utter struggle that my mum is having when it comes to getting a nappy back on him. He's also mucking around for hubby. I give him the iPod to distract him because I'm cleverer than those two. However, I know that the refusal to have a nappy on is the classic symptom of being ready for potty-training.

We have been using a potty with him in between changes for the past few months, and so far he has always performed on it, but only when he wants to pass water. He's never tried for the other one.

That was until I was recently sent a MyCarryPotty to review. He is obsessed with it, he absolutely adores it and will always 'perform' on it. He's even chosen to do a number two on it, something which is yet to happen with his static potty.

I've seen people using travel potty before and have been distinctly unimpressed. They seem to need a lot of assembly for what is often drastically urgent use. This is not something that is needed with MyCarryPotty because when you remove the outer packaging that's it; it's ready for use straight away.

And if you are in a position where you're not able to dispose of the contents straightaway then you need not worry because MyCarryPotty is fitted with a clever rubber seal and a clip shut lid. So flip the lid back over and you've got a completely leak and odour-proof container, so wherever your little one is caught short you can be in total control. It's a marvellous idea for unisex use, however you do have to be more careful with little boys that they don't end up spraying everywhere!

The Boy really does love his MyCarryPotty, and I think one of those reasons is because it's bright and attractive with a little handle that means that he can carry it himself. He's quite possessive of it in fact and will strip all his clothes and nappy off when he sees it so that he can use it. I know that when I actually take the plunge in the summer holidays then it is going to be made a lot easier by having a potty that he has ownership of and enjoys using.

For more information on MyCarryPotty visit their Facebook page or twitter stream. You can buy a MyCarryPotty here where they retail for £24.99.

I was sent a MyCarryPotty for review purposes. My opinion is, as always, honest and without prejudice.

Review: Makin' Mud Pies (or just getting soaky wet)

The Boy adores playing with water. He loves washing his hands, the bath, swimming (mostly as long as his daft mother doesn't take him too far into the deep water!), filling up containers with water, and playing with watering cans. You may have seen that I recently set up a water play area for him in the garden, which he loves. If we are feeling in an adventurous mood, we let him play with the hose which is hilarious because he always ends up "soaky wet!".

So when we saw this rather marvellous contraption recently in Toys 'R' Us we really couldn't resist it. This is the Little Tikes 'Makin' Mud Pies' Kitchen (retails for £39.99). We're getting him a sand and water table for his birthday in June, but I'm a little impatient, impulsive instinctive and so we went with my gut feeling that he would love it.

And he does, he really does.

Now I may let him loose with the water, but I'm slightly apprehensive when it comes to the 'Makin' Mud' part. (I really don't know why, because I used to be there in the garden behind the greenhouse digging in the dirt and ensuring that the consistency was just right for slopping and pouring. Just call me spoilsport mummy.) He has had lessons in mudpies from his five year old cousin, and it's only a matter of time before he tranfers these skills over to the kitchen, but for the moment, he's happy to play with the water functions.

The Little Tikes kitchen is fantastic and came along at the right time; he had started to become obsessed with turning the tap on and seeing the water gushing out. If I turned my back for a second, the little tike (ahem) was in the downstairs cloakroom splashing about in the hand basin. With this toy, he has his own tap and his own sink. The main sink and counter of the kitchen is actually a well for water which you can fill up and empty very easily, this also helps to weigh the kitchen down so it doesn't accidentally tip, or blow over in the wind. Into this counter is a moulded sink and a working tap! The tap actually pumps water out, but this is my only criticism of it; the pump action is at the moment very stiff and the water doesn't flow as easily as I think it should. However The Boy doesn't mind; he likes a challenge and it's his water so it doesn't matter. A bonus feature is that there is a bung underneath the plughole which allows for easy emptying of all the water, no residual ring is stuck anywhere in the mouldings.

The other feature of this kitchen is the mixer, used of course for ensuring a perfect consistency of mud. It's mounted on a stand on the counter, next to the sink and has a turn handle to rotate the sturdy plastic blade. It turns very easily although if The Boy gets the angle slightly wrong, it can lift up out of the bowl, but that is due to my 23 month old son's stage of physical development not a design flaw. He's actually put many different things in to mix including dried pasta and grass, but has never once thought about putting soil in yet. I'm sure the time will come! The set also comes with a sieve, a mixing bowl, a mould, a shaker pot, and two spoons; all of which are excellent for transfering water around.

I could draw on my teacher-knowledge and talk about the educational benefits of this kitchen 'til I'm blue in the face, but I'd rather let The Boy, and the toy, speak for themselves.

Review: Teddy Hunt

The Boy's favourite bedtime book has changed to this simple, yet lovely, story book from Marks and Spencer.

Teddy Hunt is a traditional 'life-the-flap' book which features a little boy (looks like The Boy) trying to find his teddy bear, called 'Spencer' (not sure if the main character's name is Mark), in order to have a picnic with him. He searches around his garden to try and find him and manages to find a lot of his other toys, but not Spencer. En route he collects up all the other toys in his wagon who are able to share in the eventual picnic. You'll never guess where Spencer was hiding all the time!

The Boy adores this book and he has made us read it repeatedly every single for the past three weeks. He now knows it really well, enough to show you how fabulous a book it is himself.

Competition: NIP + FAB Frown Fix

I'm rather aware that I'm knocking on a bit now, what with being the grand old age of 33. In addition, I'm a mother, wife and teacher. All of these things can lead to frowns occuring on a daily, possibly even hourly, basis! I've discovered that pushing my skin back down and trying to smooth down my eyebrow furrows doesn't really work, which I think is a bit inconsiderate.

So when I was approached to review the brand new NIP + FAB Frown Fix, I metaphorically bit the hand off of the kind soul offering. You may have seen NIP + FAB in the beauty pages of the national newspapers and glossy magazines. If you haven't then you've not been paying attention properly. The range of products is amazing, including a Tummy Fix and a Cellulite Fix, and is coveted by many a celebrity from Alexandra Burke through to Jennifer Aniston. To top it all off, they are launching the Frown Fix as we 'speak' so I feel a little bit special in having the opportunity to review it!

The Frown Fix which I have to try comes in a neat little tube, similar in size to a mascara so it can fit nicely in your make-up kit. One end opens up to show a little brush, the other twists to push the formula up. The description on the box says 'Frown fix is a concentrated formular designed to plump and smooth the appearance of expression lines, fine lines and wrinkles.' And hopefully my furrows caused by people who stress me out!

I followed the instructions to 'brush directly onto clean skin to target expression lines around eyes, forehead and mouth', although I didn't need it around the mouth (clearly I don't smile enough!). It is incredibly smooth, doesn't sting or feel tight (or any other unpleasant sensation) and just gently works subtly. The research indicates that 'the effects are instant (within a couple of minutes), but everyday use also results in a cumulative effect so lines become permanently more visible. Clinical tests on the active ingredient has shown a reduction in wrinkles of up to 50% over a 60 day period.'

I'd call it botox in a tube, but that sounds derogatory to Frown Fix as it doesn't render you incapable of showing expression. Don't even think of it as polyfilla. Consider it a magic wand to indicate that you are a young and carefree woman! It could just be your new BFF!

I am giving FIVE of you lucky individuals the chance to win a NIP + FAB Frown Fix (which retail for £10.25 each in Boots and Harvey Nichols don'cha know).

In order to be in with a chance of winning, please do all of the following things:

  1. Tell me in the comments box whether you are going to be using it fill the laughter or frown lines, and who causes them!
  2. 'Follow' NIP + FAB on twitter or 'like' on Facebook
  3. Tweet the following message:

"I've entered to win a @NipandFab Frown Fix on @TheBoyandMe's blog https://www.theboyandme.co.uk/?p=2216"

Please only leave one comment to tell me that you've done these things. You won't be getting more entries if you leave separate comments!

T&C:

The competition will end on Monday 9th May 2011 at 8pm. I will draw five winners using www.random.org and notify them by e-mail, I will need a reply by Wednesday 11th May 2011 at 8pm or I will redraw. Open to UK entrants only please.

GOOD LUCK!

I have been provided with a tube of Frown Fix for the purpose of this review, which is as always honest and my own opinion. No other reward was given.

Competition: MiaTui Bags

I have been lucky enough to be approached to review a new range of 'big' bags created by Charlotte over at MiaTui.

MiaTui bags are a fantastic range of bags which have been created by mother of two Charlotte, who is currently living out in Vietnam as an ex-pat. Charlotte realised that many of the change-bags available nowadays just weren't practical or attractive enough for modern women, and therefore set about designing and producing practical bags which are fashionable and can be multi-purpose.

What makes these bags different for me is that they are not produced by a huge multi-national company by a man. MiaTui have used local (Vietnamese) designers, resources and manufacturers to produce the bags; I particularly found it fascinating that Charlotte has made the decision to work with "local women who have their own small businesses, getting paid a fair wage for their work and working their own hours to suit their family circumstances." This is an incredibly responsible attitude of Charlotte, it probably would be easy to having the bags produced in less than ethical situation, but she has thought long and hard about the image that MiaTui bags present. This post really illustrates the background to MiaTui.

The bag came in a large box well protected by air-pockets, but again this is another example of Charlotte's responsible attitude; Opus Air Pockets are biodegradable and compostable, so when put into plastic recycling it only takes 12-24 months to degrade. Underneath this is a beautiful wrapped bag in bright pink tissue paper: I felt like it was Christmas!

And so on to the bag and why it's better than others out there!

I chose the Amelie White-Pink bag to review after much deliberation, although I had the choice of seven different colours and I seriously considered the Aubergine (a brilliant colour for Autumn and Winter I feel).

Sunday was test day, a beautiful day to go to the park (by the sea) and the picture on the left illustrates all the things that would normally be shoved into the change-bag or bottom of the push-chair. I know what you're thinking, "That will never all fit in there!"

"Ha!" says I, "Look!"

Look at the organisation in that bag! And look how little space is taken up in it!

Inside the bag are several really deep pockets to hold the contents in an organised way:

  • a big pocket along one side which is perfect for The Boy's spare clothes and nappies.
  • a pocket for your phone (underneath the end of the zip so you can access it quickly) and it's also big enough to fit the iPod touch (a necessary must to distract The Boy sometimes)
  • a proper-sized insulated drinks pocket (how infuriating is it when only half the bottle fits in like in other bags?)
  • two further pockets along the other side, into these I put my purse and camera, and the wipes and nappy sacks.
  • in the middle section I had the two PVC bags which come with the Amelie bag but are also sold separately. One of them had nappy cream, Savlon, teething gel, anti-bac handwash and sun-cream. The other had packets of snacks for The Boy. There was a towel (in case he went paddling) and I also had the matching clutch bag into which I put essential make-up and other bits and bobs that you'd find in a lady's handbag!
  • my car keys which were clipped on to one of the two safety clips.

The Amelie bag hangs brilliantly off the back of the stroller because, as well as the big handles which enable you to use it as a shoulder bag, there is a long strap which can be attached to either end of the bag. Yes, that is a photo of me!

The bag held everything in it that I needed it to and there was space for more; I could quite easily have had a couple of small toys or a book in there for The Boy, or his swimming stuff and a picnic blanket (I'm thinking ahead here to Friday when we're going to country park which has paddling facilities in it). The most important feature for me was the long zip closing the contents up nice and secure; I hate it when everyone can see into your bag and everything falls out!

The Amelie bag is adapatable to your needs; travel bag, work bag (the large pocket can hold a 13" laptop or iPad), change bag, beach bag (it is made from a splash-proof material). I actually wish that Charlotte had created this two years ago and then I could have dispensed with the two or three change-bags that I've tried during that time!

For a short-time only, until Easter Monday, to celebrate the launch of her online shop, MiaTui are offering the bags with 20% off which brings them down from a very reasonable £54.99 to a bargain £44.50 with free postage and packaging. They are despatched from the UK, so don't worry about waiting more than a couple of days for them to be delivered.

Not only do MiaTui produce multi-purpose bags for mums, but they also produce a range of rucksacks for children with 8 different designs for both girls and boys. I actually really like the silver dot and am thinking of sneakily buying one for myself The Boy!

To be in with a chance of winning one of these rucksacks for your little one (or yourself!) then you will need to do all of the following:

1) Visit www.MiaTui.com and then come back to tell me your favourite item in the comments box below.

2) Either follow MiaTui on twitter or 'like' on Facebook.

3) You will also need to tweet the following message:

"I've entered to win a @miatuibags with @TheBoyandMe's blog https://www.theboyandme.co.uk/?p=2095"

There are no additional entries, so please just leave one comment in the box telling me: your favourite item from www.MiaTui.com and whether you have followed on twitter or liked on Facebook.

Competition closes on Thursday 5th May 2011 at 8pm. I will contact the winner that night and they need to reply with their colour choice of rucksack by Saturday 7th May 2011 at 8pm or I will redraw a winner. Open to UK entrants only.

While I have been provided with this bag for the purpose of this review, my opinion is honest and fair, and I have not received any payment for this post.

The winner of the competition is: SomethingBlue_2!

Congratulations, and thank you to everyone who entered!

Competition: Jackson Reece wipes

I have recently been lucky enough to be sent a sample of the range of Jackson Reece wipes.

There are many reasons that I could tell you, to explain why Jackson Reece wipes are good:

  • They are a natural, healthier alternative. The "unique herbal formula soothes and protects against common skin irritations such as nappy rash and eczema and contains none of the harsh ingredients that can potentially damage delicate skin." Excellent news to us, we have very sensitive skin in this household.
  • They have been dermatologically tested.
  • They contain Certified Organic Aloe Vera (naturally hydrating, healing & cooling), Certified Organic Tea Tree Oil (naturally antibacterial), and Certified Organic Lavender Essential Oil (soothing and calming). I believe quite strongly in the healing power of the natural and herbal alternatives. There's a reason that they've been used for hundreds of years.
  • The bio-degradable wipes are made from wood pulp which is a sustainable resource. They are also compostable and will degrade within 12 weeks in aerobic conditions. More importantly to me is that the packaging is more degradable than normal wipes packaging; not 500 years in a landfill site!
  • The wipes have not been tested on animals.
  • They are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

All of these are true and surely enough of a reason to start using these wipes. There are a few ranges out there at the moment which are suitable for sensitive skin or use natural products, this has got to be the best incorporating both factors.

Jackson Reece wipes have not just one USP, but several. If you've watched the vast array of entrepreneurial programmes out there (you can't have missed them!) then you will know that I am talking about the Unique Selling Point. What makes these wipes different to others?

Yes it's the unique herbal formula that I've already mentioned, and yes, it's the fact that they are carbon conscious. They have chosen to have their wipes manufactured in the United Kingdom in order to keep the carbon footprint low, and for me there are too many industries farming their production overseas, so it's good to see that they are providing employment at home.

However, the reason that I really like them is because they derive from the need for a real solution to a real child's problems. Jackon and Reece are two little boys, the sons of Janet and Colin, the founders of the company. Jackson is the elder son, and at 8 months old he developed horrendous eczema. The steroid cream was thinning his skin and lowering the tolerance of his immune system which made him ill. His parents explored the range of wipes to try and find alcohol-free, natural wipes and found none. After years of extensive research, they determinately designed the Jackson Reece wipes.

This is what makes me want to buy them and use them. Like Kirsty Henshaw of Worthenshaws 'fame', these are people who have worked hard to solve it in a safe and ethical manner whilst providing a solution for their own son's problem, and helping others along the way.

The other major factor is that actually, they are very good. Extremely soft and smooth without a gritty feel to them (unlike some supermarket brands), they are also thick and plush. We've all had occasions when we needed a thicker than normal wipe and have been let-down in a rather grim manner, Jackson Reece wipes have been successful! Yay, no more icky fingers! I've also been sneakily using them (shhh, don't tell The Boy) as facial wipes and they've left my own skin feeling smooth, soft and clean.

Jackson Reece wipes are the Rolls Royce of baby wipes; soft, strong, plush, and very attractive.

Available in John Lewis, a wealth of online shops, and larger Tesco stores (as part of the Baby Event until 12th April they are on offer: £2.49 for 2 packs).

However, three lucky readers could win a pack of the unscented wipes (72 wipes in a pack).

In order to enter, please do the following:

Follow Jackson Reece on twitter and tweet the following message:

"I want to win @JacksonReece wipes with @TheBoyandMe https://www.theboyandme.co.uk/?p=1516"

Then tell me that you've done it in the comments box below.

Competition closes Saturday 16th April 2011 at 8pm. Open to UK entrants only. The three winners must respond by Monday 18th Apil 2011 or I will redraw.

The winners are:

And they are:

– Emma Cella

– Rhonda

– Elaine Livingstone.

Congratulations you three.

Everyone else, please keep entering.

Review: Happyland Puzzles (ELC)

I popped into Mothercare yesterday to buy The Boy a pair of sunglasses (with the band that goes around the back of the head) and ended up spending £56 on toys in the Early Learning Centre department! They've got a brilliant little wheelbarrow at the moment, which he just had to have, and some other things fell into the trolley as I was walking around. (Whoops, don't tell hubby!)

One of the things that I bought is the Happyland Puzzles, which is a set of 6 puzzles for ages 18 months – 3 years.

I'd become very conscious lately that the only puzzles that The Boy ever does is the inlay designs; this is not helping him develop his problem-solving skills that much. I was especially alarmed when a work colleague had told me that her 2½ year old son had just completed a 25-piece jigsaw. I panicked! I don't think that The Boy has managed more than a 2-piece one that I bought him at Christmas and he struggled with then!

[Please note the image shows a tin and the one I bought came in a cardboard box made from 'forest friendly cardboard'. I know which one I prefer]

Why I particularly like this pack is three-fold.

  1. It has 6 jigsaws in it, some are 2-piece, some are 3-piece and some are 4-piece. It doesn't follow suit that the hardest one is the 4-piece; I actually think that the hardest one is the 3-piece one because of the angles that it has to join in at. Therefore they are of differentiated ability and challenge. As a teacher, this pleases me.
  2. The pictures are of the Happyland range, and we have quite a few of them. Seeing his face earlier as he recognised the merry-go-round was classic. He then upped and pulled open his toybox and yanked it out. He looked back at the picture and even tried to press the button on the jigsaw. The other set that we have that features on the jigsaw is the school, and yes, he tried to open the door on the school and press the bell on the tower.
  3. The pieces are nice and chunky, but small enough for little hands. They're also made of FSC mixed sources cardboard.

This jigsaw set is a winner in this household and at only £6 is a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

No, I didn't get the sunglasses, they're not in stock yet.

Competition: 'Red Dog, Blue Dog' – Orchard Toys

I’ve recently been sent the game ‘Red Dog, Blue Dog’ by Orchard Toys to review with The Boy. The game is a first colour match lotto aimed at 2-4 players and children from 2-5 years and priced at £9.25.

When he first saw the box, The Boy was extremely excited and eager to ‘ope’-n it up, he then spent ten – fifteen minutes examining the four different lotto boards, identifying the pictures on them, and then popping out the lotto cards from the punched-out templates. He took a shine straight away to the card with the blue spider on it, and spent much of the remaining morning carrying it around clutched in his hand!

We’ve brought the game away with us on our mini-holiday as I decided that far from the madding crowd would be a good place to help us concentrate and test the game out. The players comprised of mummy, daddy and The Boy, with Oliver Monkey refereeing to ensure fair play.

We haven’t played the game strictly according to the rules as the game is aimed at 2-5 years and The Boy is only 21 months; he doesn’t completely understand the concept of taking turns. However, this shows the adaptability of the game.

We started by sorting the cards into colours, he was able to help us do this quite easily and it was quite reassuring that he could do this as he hasn’t always put the right name to a colour, but in doing this he showed us that he was aware that they were separate and that he could sort. I chose to do this because there are six different coloured objects on each board, but there are not six colours of each object (as there are only four boards).

Next we took it in turns to choose an object from the board for him to find; I am extremely pleased that whether we were asking him to find a blue spider or a red spider, he was able to identify the colours. So even though he can’t remember the names at the time, he does know what the colours are. Playing this game will help consolidate his knowledge of colours. He thoroughly enjoyed finding the game, and I could see his eyes flitting between the cards as he was trying to identify the card he needed.

My husband and I were discussing other uses of the game afterwards, and I suggested that we could use the cards to play ‘Pairs’ or as a colour sorting game. As both a parent, qualified nursery nurse and primary school teacher, I think that this is an extremely adaptable and suitable game for toddlers and infants. A feature that I like on the box is the Orchard Toys’ Educational Guide, which suggests:

  • Links with Early Learning Goals
  • Develop personal and social skills
  • Encourage observation.

I would agree with those educational outcomes but also feel that it will help to develop children’s pre-mathematical and reading skills (identification of shapes and colours, plus the objects’ names are written on the cards).

Definitely a winner in this household!

Tidying up is part of the game!

BSensible Bedsheet

I have recently been sent the B-Sensible cot-sheet to review.

This bed-sheet couldn't have come at a better time to be perfectly honest; we've just had a series of failures at night with our usual brand of nappies. Yes I know this is a review for a bed-sheet but this has a connection. The brand of nappies which has usually seen The Boy happy throughout the night from 7.30 to 6.30 has failed to work. This means that by the time we got into him in the morning, his sleepsuit, sleeping bag and cot sheet were saturated. Which also meant that the zip-off mattress cover was drenched. It was getting tedious having to get it washed and dry before his 11am nap!

The B-Sensible cot-sheet is different to normal bedding because it is a water-resistant, breathable fitted child's sheet. The cot-sheet uses 100% natural fibres which 'offer a unique combination of the most desirable properties for the comfort and care of your baby's skin.' Other features include:

  • 100% natural Tencel thermo-regulating fabric
  • The latest-generation breathable membrane naturally that is virtually undetectable.
  • Dermofresh waterproofing system
  • Naturally provides a barrier against bacteria and mites
  • Hypoallergenic clinically proven to be suitable for those with sensitive skin, eczema, asthma & rhinitis.
  • Totally eco-friendly manufacturing process.

This sheet was a marvel! During the trial and error process of finding a nappy which wasn't failing The Boy at night, we used this sheet constantly and not once did it leak through to the mattress cover! The sheet is suitable for machine washing at 90°C and can be tumble-dried. Here's the best bit for a busy working mum who irons everything: it's NON-IRON! Hurrah!

Even though we've now progressed to the point where we don't suffer with nappy leaks during the night, we are continuing to use this sheet; it is soft, smooth, comfortable and feels very fresh. We tested the white sheet, but it also comes in 24 different colours including Sky Blue, Pink, Lemon, and Arran. For children it is available in a variety of different sizes from moses basket to single sheet. There is also a range of bedding for adults.

Sleep is such an important element to the growth and development of babies and children, having it hampered by a leaking nappy is detrimental. The Boy is sleeping peacefully and comfortably thanks to the B-Sensible cot-sheet.
