The Gallery: My Inspiration
And so the tricky Tara is back to giving us testing tasks:
Inspirational People.
Who has inspired you? A relative, your own mum, your dad, a close friend, someone famous, a stranger even.
The obvious one for me is my mum; she's amazing and has been through so much. However, she'd hate the thought of me writing anything about her on my blog, so I'm going to honour that.
While she has been the wind beneath my wings (thanks Bette) for many years, and Mr. TheBoyandMe is my rock, my new guiding light is none other than this being:
Is that not the best inspiration of them all?

Potty-Mouthed!
As many of you will know, in the Summer holidays I braved the very important stage known as 'potty training'. Not me, The Boy! I've been trained for 33 years and aside from the odd Tena Lady moment, I'm doing well thanks!
Earlier today, whilst shopping in Cardiff, The Boy announced that he needed to go to the toilet. We were standing in the shoe department of Next at the time, on our way to buy him a new Winter coat. I about turned and asked the assistant if they had one. Of course not, they are a clothes shop. I knew that expecting him to last the five minutes to the nearest one was unfair and so basically asked if I could use a cubicle in their changing rooms.
She looked at me, aghast!
I stopped, pointed to The Boy and then explained that I had a travel potty, everything would be perfectly hygienic and he was desperate. Thank you Next for letting me use the changing rooms! And thank you Potette for creating your travel potty in the first place!
And based on that, I thought I'd share my must-haves for potty-training your infant:
Seriously, you will find potty-training a whole lot easier with a potty that is easily cleaned. I found that I'd collected a lot of potties ready for training, and this is the only one that he really liked. The other 'standard' potty has gone to my mum's for use there.
- A Potette
This marvellous little travel-potty has saved our bacon so many times that we've almost got enough for a pig of our own! The Potette Plus (which is what we have) can be used either as a portable potty with specially designed bags (absorbent pad at the base to soak up the urine), or the legs can be folded out to be used a loo-seat.
Much better than Andrex ones, they are thick and soft. They also only cost 40p a pack so are really good value. The best bit though is that they have a really strong apple smell to them, which is useful for 'special' occasions!
- Pampers Easy-up Pants
These are called 'special car pants' or 'special sleep pants' in our house. I won't let them be referred to as a nappy, they are pants. We use them on two occasions: long-distance travel or at night-time. Never during the day!
I have never used a pull-up during the day (unless on a journey) and wouldn't recommend it. In my personal opinion (which anyone is perfectly entitled to ignore), little ones need to feel that they have wet to know the results of what's just happened. I can still picture The Boy's face on the first two days of potty training, when he wet for the first few times. Complete bafflement as to why he was wet, and then gradual realisation of why.
… at home. I know! Trust me, after four days I was rocking with cabin-fever, but I truly believe that me staying in for a week and being obsessed paying complete attention to his toileting signals, and always being near a potty/toilet helped him to train so quickly. However, I also think that the fact that we sat The Boy on the potty at every nappy change for months beforehand helped. When the time came, he knew what to do with it.
Within a month, he was using the toilet. I feel it's absolute nonsense that you have to retrain them to use a toilet if you've used a potty. Maybe we were just lucky, but he just used it. He switches between the two, but now takes himself to the toilet. He positions his step, stands on it, pulls his trousers and pants down, sits on, goes, wipes, climbs down, pulls his pants and trousers up, gets down from the step, repositions it, climbs up and washes his hands. I just need to dry them for him because he can't manage!
- Chocolate and frappucinos
'nuff said!
I am not professing to be the font of all knowledge here and I don't intend to offend anyone or make them anxious. One of the best tips I read that if you are not ready, then don't attempt it because you will hinder your child's progression. I also believe that once you start, you can't go back because it just confuses them. I was lucky to have the summer holidays to train him, and he was pretty much done within a fortnight, although we still had the odd accident for a few weeks after. It's now two months on, and he is amazing. We have had one accident in the past few weeks, which I think is pretty good going. We both worked really hard, and as a result we got there.
Good luck to all those going potty!

Peppa Pig: International Day
Who doesn't know and love Peppa Pig? The loveable, cheeky piggy is The Boy's firm favourite, meaning that we've been to Peppa Pig World twice! Watching Peppa and George is the guaranteed way to get him to do anything. He's so obsessed that he now calls himself George Pig, Mr. TheBoyandMe is Daddy Pig and I am Mummy Pig.
We've recently been sent Peppa's new DVD to review which makes me a happy mummy (there are only so many times that I can watch her buy new red shoes), and The Boy a happy George Pig.
Review: Little Dish – Chicken & Two Veg Pasta
I'm mentioned several times that I am a fussy mummy when it comes to what I let The Boy eat. I try and cooke fresh foods for The Boy, but as a part-time working mum it's hard to do that all the time. We've also recently changed when The Boy has his main meal; he now has it lunch-time. My mum looks after him three lunchtimes a week, and I can't expect her to cook from fresh everytime for him. Therefore when I do my shop, I tend to pop a couple of toddler meals into the shopping trolley.
One of the brands that I trust is Little Dish. I've reviewed one of their new meals before, and it actually prompted me to start using them more regularly. The lovely Charlotte at Little Dish recently contacted me and asked me if The Boy would like to try their new recipe: Chicken and Two Veg Pasta.
I was quite eager as I have problems getting The Boy to eat chicken. This pasta dish is mixed with carrots and broccoli in a scrummy cheese sauce. Well, that's a guaranteed success straight away because he adores carrots and cheese sauce. The chicken was in small, diced pieces and was very tender. He absolutely wolfed it down.
Little Dish Chicken and Two Veg Pasta is available from Tesco stores nationwide now.
I was sent a Little Dish meal in order to review. They also sent a little cuddly cow for The Boy, which was nice! His opinion is unbiased and honest because he's two years old.
The Most Stylish Party Bag
When it was The Boy's last birthday I tried really hard to find some different party bags to do with the theme of cars. Not Cars, but cars. I didn't want Lightning McQueen all over them, nor at best did I want Roary on them. I wanted some nice Mr. Men type cars. In the end I settled for vintage racing cars.
I wasn't happy though because they looked so mass produced and it felt like it was just another party bag from just another party. I've already decided on next year's theme (not telling, don't ask) and am keeping my eyes open for appropriate party gear as and when I see it.
This is why when I was approached to review a set of party bags, I jumped at the chance.
How much more effective and individual would it have been if I had got the children to make their own party bags? It would also have given an activity for them to do, especially as they were stuck in doors due to torrential rain and gale force winds. In June!
Well using this really clever and creative set from RoseRed & Blue, that is exactly what you can do. They have a creative party bag set containing 10 natural cotton bags and a pack of 15 PastelDye crayons in order to personalise the bags. These plain cotton bags and the fabric crayons allow children to decorate their own bag and go home proud with something that they have done themselves; guaranteed to last longer than house-car-house-bin.
The Boy kindly tried them out for me:
The fabric crayons are incredibly easy to use and leave a vibrant and bold mark on the cotton bag, which can be fixed really easily by placing a sheet of kitchen towel or muslin over the top and ironing on a non-steam setting. They are the perfect size for a party bag. Once there's a small toy, a bottle of bubbles and a slice of cake in there, it truly would be the perfect party bag set to impress your little one and last a long time, far more environmentally friendly than plastic bags.
I am definitely going to be buying some more of these to top up the supply for his next party. At £17.50 I think this is a good price for the products. The fabric crayons will last for far longer than the inital activity with the children and so can be reused. I am pretty positive that I am not alone in spending £2+ per party bag and contents. With these £1.20 of that (the price of an individual bag) would be spent on each bag, but that is the present! I think it's very good value, providing an excellent activity for children's parties.
We were sent a Creative Party Bag set for the purpose of this review. My opinion is unbiased and honest.
