Having lived in a seaside town for 34 of my 37 years, you'd think I'd know by now to check tide times before setting off for one 20 miles away? Most of the time it's fine because while the tidal range in this part of the Bristol Channel is huge (14 metres, second only to Nova Scotia), most of the beaches are long and shallow which leave plenty of area to play on. Not Southerndown though, when the tide is in, it's bye-bye beach.
We went for a wander in the nearby Dunraven Gardens and castle ruins instead, it's quite amazing to think people were living here during the Second World War, when it was used as a military hospital. Dunraven Castle was later sold in the 1960s and eventually demolished. I'm pretty sure that if the National Trust had been approached they'd have rescued it, because all that remains in 2014 is the walled gardens and one, giant, stone windowframe with a smattering of stone steps nearby. A real tragedy to have lost this from our heritage.

I love the reflection in the water.
It's quite amazing how clear it is, isn't it?
i love this shot. the reflection is very interesting. a bit spooky even – as though there were another child waiting in the water.
Nope, definitely just The Boy watching the penny he'd just thrown in sinking down to the bottom.
This is a magical shot, it looks like something out of a fairy tale x
Thank you, I'm really pleased with the oldy worldy look about it.
Love the filter you've used. It's actually quite a haunting image. Shame to have lost such a beautiful building.
Thanks, good old Snapseed! It's such a shame, I find it inconceivable they'd so readily tear down a perfectly good building.
Tragic indeed, but then again England has so many old buildings they can't save them all. Lovely photograph.
No you're right, it just seems such a shame that a perfectly good building could be so easily torn down; it wasn't even derelict. Thank you.
What an amazing photo, The Boy looks tranfixed and the reflection is so clear.
He was watching his penny drift down to the bottom.
Beautiful photos – love the toned down colours. Such a shame that fabulous, historic buildings like that could be lost.
It seems bizarre to me that they would so easily tear it down, but I think in this crazy and fast – paced world of 2014 we appreciate history that bit more?
I adore this picture, the staging, the reflection it is just stunning!
Thank you, beautiful surroundings which make decent photos very easy.
i love how the colour of his clothes compliments the colour of his surroundings. and great reflection caught too x
I absolutely didn't do that on purpose at all. Ever. I was aiming for symmetry with the photo but the reflection was a bonus.
such a lovely clear reflection in the water and what beautiful surroundings!!
They really are very picturesque, and most unexpected next to the rugged cliff.
Gorgeous photo and love the filter you've used, makes it feel very mysterious and other-worldly.
Thank you, it seemed apt for the surroundings.
Beautiful photos, really lovely 🙂
Amazing concept! Love the reflection and the effect! #mysundayphoto
Such a shame that no one saved the building, what an amazing building it looked like.
As for the photo it's been beautifully edited, I bet the gardens are amazing to walk around

Such a stunning picture. The colours. It looks almost spooky. A little bit Harry Potter. I agree that so many places like this are lost. Such a shame as always great places to visit with a little one. #MySundayPhoto
