It never fails to astound me how much The Boy responds to his lunch being presented in a fun way; using a few food picks with cute characters on the top of a bunch of grapes, or a sandwich cutter to transform even the most basic ham sandwich, makes lunch more exciting to a four year old child!
I've been collecting little bits and pieces for a few weeks now to make an Easter Bento lunch box for His Fussiness. Most of his lunch was put into a cardboard egg box (I actually used one of the Cadbury's Egg 'n' Spoon boxes) with different fillings in each section:
- plastic refillable eggs were filled with mini sausages, grapes, cheese & herb puffs, cucumber;
- for The Boy's sweet treat, he had a chocolate Easter coin (from Aldi);
- his ham sandwiches (would they be anything else?) were cut using rabbit head cookie cutters, and some candy eyes to make them more realistic.
Most of which I've put into this lunch box are items which I had anyway, it's just the little chick food picks which were an extra purchase from Eats Amazing, and the rabbit ear cutters were part of a set I bought in the sale at Tesco's after Easter last year. I'd also bought a pack of six Easter treat loot boxes from eBay for a couple of pounds. I'd also found some nifty carrot napkins which are in the seasonal aisle of Tesco's at the moment.
The Boy took this to school today as a surprise and was completely enthralled, as were the dinner ladies apparently. Bento lunches are an ideal way to make the limited range of food that The Boy likes for lunch more interesting, he's not a child who likes a huge range of exotic foods and therefore any way that I can to make the same things seem more appealing is welcomed. Using a sandwich cutter takes no more time than cutting the sandwiches with a knife, nor does putting grapes into a cute little pot rather than a bag or putting a few food picks in to decorate the items; but I've found it far more interesting to make, and The Boy wolfs everything down!
