One of the most captivating CBeebies programmes at the moment is 'The Adventures of Abney & Teal' during the tea-time slot. It's been a part of the schedule for the past year or so and completely captures our imagination; it's often the last programme we watch before the television is turned off (for the screen-free hour before bed) and I think it's a lovely calming programme to end the day with.
Abney and Teal are two of the characters who live on a series of islands, in the middle of a lake in a park in a busy city. They have fun and games, plenty of hijinks with their other friends Neep (a small burrowing creature), Bop (a seal type of creature who lives in the water), the Poc-Pocs (a set of 7 comma-shaped wooden objects or seed creatures), and Toby Dog (a melodeon-playing dog who always sits upright on the same place on the lake's mainland shore).
Now a series of books have been created to accompany the popular television series and we've been sent copies of these books. The most popular one is the interactive book: An Island Adventure which is a pop-in-the-slot book (RRP £7.99). On each page there are a number of slots which cardboard cut-outs of the main characters slot into; there are a number of different cut-outs for each figure in different positions to accommodate the different scenes.
The Boy adoes this book, he loves selecting the different characters and trying them out to make each scene different each time. It's a brilliant book and he's completely engaged in the story, making up additional information.
We were also sent a copy of the other two books in the series: Bop's Hiccups and Brilliant Boots (£5.99 each). Traditional picture story books, they have thick, matt pages rich in colour illustrations throughout. They are currently The Boy's favourite bedtime stories and are read over and over again.
To accompany the new books from Walker Books there are two fantastic beanie toys available which really help make the books and television series interactive. The Boy loves playing with these, acting out the books we've read together; they're currently sat at the end of his bed along with all of his other cuddly toys.
The Adventures of Abney & Teal are a really beautiful set of books which every pre-schooler should have on their bookshelf!
