Galt Art Equipment

Imagine The Boy's surprise and delight when he opened up the box of the above goodies from Galt Toys for us to review. He absolutely adores all types of craft activities, but painting and drawing with his crayons are the utmost all-time top two for him. He was almost beside himself when he saw some new 'draw-draws' and when his little eyes caught sight of the paint, bless him, he couldn't stop jigging with excitement.

The crayons got the first round of serious analysis: definitely a success there! He took the pot over to his desk, sat down and started to examine the colours. In the pack of goodies that Galt sent us was a pack of 25 sheets of paper. The paper is A2 size and therefore quite large, perfect for large scale painting or sticking activities, but it also means that I can halve each sheet making it go further (we also always use both sides of the paper – environmentally aware!).

The crayons are a delightful rainbow of colours, 24 in total, including various shades of the primary colours and a range of secondary and tertiary hues aswell. They are described as chunky crayons which are ideal. As a teacher I remember a training session where we were taught not to give little children jumbo writing implements because they only have small hands and small grip. However, I've tried thinner crayons and he just ends up accidentally snapping them in half as he is too young to be aware of strength of grip.

As you can see from the pictures, drawing is a very serious business in this household (definitely a left-hander).

In the pack of art resources, we were also sent these finger paints:

The Boy is an independent little creature who likes to think outside the box already (don't you love toddler thinking?) and therefore wanted his paintbrushes to use with them. These paints are great; in the pack are six 100ml pots of bright, thick and washable paint. And yes they are washable! I've had my hands stained for hours after using the Crayola washable paints (especially the blue and green ones) but not with these paints.

*There is a disclaimer on the box that it may not remove from materials and surfaces that cannot be laundered, although it does say it can wash from most machine washable clothes.

The Boy had great fun with painting, he loves exploring the colours and textures as you can see:

We were also sent a pack of face-paint sticks to use, and I tried to test these but the little monkey wouldn't keep still long enough for me to get more than the outline of a spider's body and three of his eight legs! When he's a few months older, I'm sure that he will enjoy using these a lot more but I suspect he's just a little too young at the moment. I will say though that they are encased in a plastic tubing to prevent mucky hands with a push-up sliding holder for the actual face-paint stick in order to maximise the amount of face-paint used. It strikes me as an excellent idea.

I was very impressed with both the paints and the crayons, they are a much richer hue and depth of colour than other well-known branded crayons and paints. I will be purchasing these in future, especially  because of the fact that the deeper coloured paints doesn't stain skin!

While I received these products free of charge to provide an honest review, I have not been offered any other reward for my opinion.

B Organic Skincare: Hand Care Set – Lavender and Chamomile

I am lucky enough to have recently been sent some rather lovely toiletries from B Organic Skincare to trial and review.

I was sent the gorgeous Lavender and Chamomile Handcare Set which was perfect as my hands have become really dry and sore, and started to crack in between my fingers. For a mum of a baby or toddler, when all you seem to be doing is washing your hands, this cold weather is torture with the biting wind chapping and drying out all your skin. I'd been using Neutrogena which was good but just wasn't having a lasting effect throughout the day.

The set consists of the following:

Lavender Hand Wash

"Our organic hand wash will clean your hands without drying out your skin with nasty chemical, our certified organic lavender essential oil will keep them soft & soothe skin irritations, cuts and scrapes. Follow up with our B Organic hand lotion to keep your hands pampered."

Lavender and Chamomile Hand Lotion

"Our organic hand lotion will nourish your hands and feed your skin whilst lavender and chamomile soothe skin irritation, cuts and scrapes."

Both products are delicately fragranced with organic lavender essential oils which are designed to keep hands soft and soothe. The wash and lotion are presented in an attractive aluminium canister with a pump dispenser.

Firstly, the handwash is great; just the right amount is dispensed and it cleans really well. I was apprehensive that the cracks between my fingers would sting during use but it is so gentle that my concerns were unfounded. Often with handwashes you can feel a soapy residue on them but not with this one. There was also a pleasant faint aroma of lavender on my hands for about 20 minutes afterwards.

Similarly the hand lotion is fragranced with organic lavender essential oil but twinned with the soothing qualities of chamomile. I'm always sceptical of many hand lotions, they can leave your hands feeling greasy or slimy with a film that taints everything you touch or eat. That's asides from whether it works or not! Again, the pump dispenser produced just the right amount to massage into my hands and wrists, soaking in well and no residue to detect. Within a few days use, the dry and cracked scaley skin between my fingers was soothed and healed with only a twice daily application.

I will definitely be using these products again and am planning to buy the giftset (gift-wrapping optional) for my sister's birthday in a month's time as she suffers with her hands as I do. I can also rest assured that she will appreciate and use them as she is incredibly particular about the types of products she uses, and I'll be able to tell her that B Organic Skincare products are:

  • paraben free
  • lanolin free
  • Ethoxylate-free
  • Propylene Glycol-free
  • Silicone-free
  • DEA-free
  • artificial colour-free
  • contain organic essential oils (lavender, chamomile and aloe-vera)
  • not tested on animals, 'only on friends and family'.

While I received these products free of charge to provide an honest review, I have not been offered any other reward for my opinion.

Test-drive 2: Return of the Mac

I've had the Techno XLR about a month now and it's fair to say that I love it! I have not used my iCandy Cherry once, which to be honest I am rather heart-broken about as I do adore it. However, the Maclaren is so much easier to use when getting in and out of the car, and because it is an umbrella-folding pushchair, it also provides so much more space for other essentials, like the shopping. Just look at how much room I now have in the boot of my Scenic for other items:

This is excellent news for us. We're going away for the weekend soon and will have to take the travel-cot with us for The Boy. I would normally be panicking by this point in the run-up, but not now. Usually, there hasn't been space in the boot as the frame of my old pushchair took up three-quarters of the floor space and once the seat part was laid on top, half the height of the boot had disappeared as well. The travel-cot usually had to go on the floor in the back, which meant that I had no space to put my legs (I sit next to him on long car journeys, while hubby drives). Now we can get the travel-cot in the boot too, meaning I'm more comfortable and it's a safer car journey with less loose objects to do damage in the event of an accident.

I've used the Techno XLR a fair amount around town, but also in off-tarmac locations. We went to a local country park in the squelchy mud and it more than handled the ruts and pot-holes. It was also a freezing afternoon and The Boy was able to tuck his arms under the apron of the foot-muff and was toastie-warm. The top of the apron is designed to fold back, and he's quite happy to rest his arms out, but the minute he thinks it's a bit chilly: "armies in!"

We popped to the beach last weekend and took the pushchair onto the sand with us. Down the slope, walk onto the sand and we had the usual anticipation of the pushchair getting stuck in. Not this time. It must be the way the wheels have been designed; they're far smaller than the iCandy and are what I'll call 'double-wheels' for want of a better phrase. They move better on 'unstable' surfaces and so we were able to push the Maclaren across the sand rather than have to drag it. And it did look rather attractive on the beach waiting for us to finish paddling.

The Boy love his new pushchair and finds it incredibly comfortable. Following a Monkey Music session a fortnight ago, I had to pop to a couple of the shops in the town centre. I knew I was pushing it for his nap-time, but I really had to get a few things and he ws quite happy chomping on his snack and observing the world. I nipped into the library and having picked up the information I wanted, I asked The Boy if he was ready to go home for his sleep. No reply. I glanced down and he'd fallen asleep! He was so snug and warm that the silence of the library had pushed him over the edge. The Techno XLR is so easy to adjust as it has four positions for the back, so I reached down and pulled the lever on the back which lowered him down to almost flat. He could have gone lower, but the change bag was hanging off the back so I didn't want to knock his head.

Finally this brings me to the last point that I wanted to make about the Maclaren Techno XLR. I had had a minor gripe about the size of the shopping basket underneath, in comparison to what I was used to. However, I also couldn't stand my change-bag anymore because it was an inconvenient shape; big but the wrong dimensions. So I bought a new one in the style of a messenger bag which fits in the shopping basket with room to spare for smaller items of shopping, but is far more convenient slung over the handlebars. I can get to my purse and his drink more easily, and it frees up a lot of space in the shopping basket for its intended purpose. Loads of space for grocery shopping in the town centre!

The Maclaren Techno XLR is suitable from birth to toddler as a 3-in-1 travel solution. It has :

  • a 4-position seat with single-hand recline,
  • extendable hood with sun visor and viewing window,
  • height-adjustable handles (I'm 5'9 and have them on the lowest setting, hubby is 6' and uses the heighest),
  • all-round suspension and linked brakes,
  • extendable calf-rest,
  • footmuff, and
  • raincover (which is really easy to put on & can store in one of the pockets at the back of the pushchair).

A soft carry-cot is available as an additional extra for use from birth, and it also take the Recaro Young Profi Plus car-seat, with adaptors. Excellent news for us as we already own that.

Review – Pally Pirate Noah

I recently wrote about one of The Boy's favourite toys; the I'm Toy Fire Engine Workbench. When Jean from @ToyJeanius read my review, she offered to send me a similar toy that she thought The Boy might like to play with and review. I was only too happy to accept her offer as I am a big fan of the I'm Toy range, many of which Toyjeanius stock.

From the very first moment that you hold an I'm Toy box in your hands, it is obvious that this is special; a quality toy, possibly even an heirloom. The packaging is extremely attractive; corrugated natural cardboard with a full-colour sleeve illustrating the product and the different ways it can be played with.

The Boy was as eager as I was to 'ope(n)' up the Pally Pirate Noah, and he had great fun pulling out all the different parts and figuring out how they fitted together. Here's what's brilliant about the Pally Pirate Noah; there are so many different parts to the toy which can be used in different ways. Mount the ship onto the pull-along base, insert the masts and sails and you have a pirate ship. Remove the sails, wheel, cannon and treasure chest, add the house, roof and animal pegs, swap over the red pirate for the green Noah and you have an ark instead!

Or you could do what we did; take the ship off the base and assemble the pirate ship. Then flip the base over to insert the animal pegs and Noah. Then, we had a battle at sea between Noah and the pirate. Noah won, what with having God on his side, but the pirate put up a good show.

[nggallery id=5 class="shutterset_%GALLERY_NAME%"]

The Pally Pirate Noah is advertised as suitable for 24 months and up, however The Boy is 20 months old and actually got a great deal from it. Admittedly he may not have been able to play with it as imaginatively as an older child, but that's part of the appeal; I know he will enjoy it in different ways with each new stage of play development. He is outgrowing so many toys that are supposed to be suitable for up to 3 years old purely because they don't do enough, therefore they don't stimulate him. I'm very happy that this toy will last him for a good few years. The pirate ship/ark is great fun and he loves the treasure chest into which he always pops the pirate. Oh, and well, um he may used the masts as drumsticks, but then he's developing his creativity.

Another winning toy from I'm Toy and supplied by the lovely and traditional Toyjeanius!

Whilst provided with this toy for the purpose of the review, I was not given any other reward and my reviews are, as always, honest.

'Something Beginning with Blue' by Nick Sharratt & Sally Symes

The Boy loves books. I was slightly worried when he reached his first birthday; I thought that he would never progress from eating them onto actually 'reading' them. I will even admit to not leaving them out for free choice, because in this house books are sacred and it distressed me too much to see the spine being chewed!

However, in the past six months he has become obsessed with them! Some days are toy days and others are book days, when all he will want to do all day long is 'read' every book that he owns. It always amazes me how much children learn from books, even at this tender age; he's never seen a tiger but he knows what one looks like. We're working on colours and shapes at the moment, so when the lovely people at Walker Picture Books sent me this book to review it was more than appropriate.

'Something Beginning with Blue' is a delightful and beautifully illustrated book based on all the different colours of the rainbow. It takes the 'I spy' theme and transfers it to the colours of an object; e.g. 'I spy with my little eye, something beginning with… blue!'. It then lists a couple of things that it isn't and gives factual clues as to what it might be. On the opposite page to the text is a picture of a child with peep-holes for the eyes. When you look through, you can get a growing picture of what the item might be.

The Boy loves 'reading' this book. He examined the spy-holes and insisted on looking through them all, a great game of peek-a-boo! He pointed out the objects on the page, and has learnt some new colours from the book too; brown and green to name the present ones. And because he is slightly older now, he has a better awareness of how to handle the paper pages. It's not a book that I leave out for him to browse by himself at the moment, because he is a little clumsy with paper at the moment, and well quite frankly he likes to rip it if allowed. Therefore it's a special book that we look at together.

An excellent book for teaching children some of the secondary colours in a fun and different way. Good choice Walker  Picture Books!

Competition – Earth Friendly Baby and Kids

I have recently been sent some of the products from the Earth Friendly Baby and the Earth Friendly Kids range to review. This is excellent news for us as The Boy has very sensitive skin, something he has inherited from his parents; both hubby and I suffered from eczema as children, him far worse than me, and I tend to have allergic reactions to many products.

My sister had given me a tube of their Organic Red Clover Diaper Care Cream when I first had The Boy and it is marvellous stuff. The smallest amount on nappy rash clears it up fairly quickly and without harshness from chemicals. So I was more than happy to receive a pack of Earth Friendly Kids Gentle Wipes and Organic Lavender Shampoo & Bodywash to review.

The Earth Friendly Kids Gentle Wipes (flushable and 100% biodegradable) are soft and thick, which is always great. I've tried a few supermarket own-brand wipes that are quite thin and almost a little gritty, so these were a 'refreshing' change. Nothing worse when dealing with certain nappies to have to use one that is too thin! I should point out that they are labelled as being 'ideal for toilet training and sticky hands' and not intended for nappies, but they do actually work. They are nicely fragranced containing 100% organic Aloe Vera which is also soothing for little sensitive bottoms!

The one that I really must rave about is the Organic Lavender Shampoo & Bodywash. We started using it hoping that it would help with The Boy's scalp as he appears to have recently developed a toddler version of cradle-cap, which is a complete mystery to me; he never had it as a baby! It is brilliant! As it is lavender it's soothing and calming to his scalp, and used just before bedtime it is very relaxing. All three of the washes in the range contain Chamomile ' as a key ingredient, because for centuries, Chamomile has been used for its gentle healing properties – ideal for babies'. It's a top-toe wash and only the smallest amount needs to be used as it is concentrated. This one I am a big fan of, and when we run out it is definitely going to be the one that we use as opposed to Johnson's Baby Shampoo. I am a convert!

The kind folk over at Earth Friendly Baby have offered up a few products for a competition. One of you lucky individuals can be in with a chance to win items from their Earth Friendly Kids range: the Zingy Citrus Bubblebath has a blend of organic extractswith an easy-pouring bottle while the Zingy Citrus Body Lotion is ideal for the whole family, has a skin nourishing formula and has an easy to use pump.

To be in with a chance to win these two items just tell me what your child's favourite bath-toy is in the comments box below.

DreamGenii: Twinkle Togs

I have recently been sent a DreamGenii: Twinkle Tog to use with The Boy.

I was more than happy to be asked to review this revolutionary sleepsuit because he doesn't keep still in his cot. Quite frankly the concept of putting him under a sheet or blanket was ruled out when at the age of 1 month he would end up with it scrunched up under his armpits in the morning because he'd been flicking his legs about in the night. He's become progressively more acrobatic during the night ever since. It is not at all unusual for him to do a full 720°!

We use sleeping bags with him but sometimes he becomes frustrated that he can't move his legs very much. The Twinkle Tog is different because it is an all-in-one wearable bedtime quilt and, the one I have, is 2.5togs in thickness, therefore ideal for the Winter months. They do a lighter weight one for the summer too.

"If you travel in the car during the evening, the dreamgenii® Twinkle Tog allows your toddler to be unstrapped easily from their car seat and transferred to bed without unnecessary disturbance. With a quilted outer, and a soft jersey lining, the dreamgenii® Twinkle Tog will ensure that your toddler has a comfortable, undisturbed and cosy night – quite simply A Magical Night's Sleep."

The fact that it can be used in the car is fabulous. We've got a couple of trips coming up which are going to involve evening travel. We'll be able to get him into his pyjamas and the Twinkle Tog before strapping him into the car-seat and it won't interfere with the safety straps. For parents who are looking for an alternative to a Gro-bag, this is ideal!

As you can see from the photo, The Boy is extremely comfortable sleeping in his Twinkle Togs; he had far more freedom and slept just as soundly as in a sleeping bag, but had more independence prior to bed, and after waking up. I'll definitely be using this for a while yet!

Available in Summer and Winter tog weights and in a variety of patterns and age sizes.

Exclusively available in the UK from www.Mothercare.com and selected Mothercare Stores

Wee-waa, wee-waa!

One of The Boy's current favourite toys is a wooden fire engine he received from hubby's parents for Christmas. When he was little, I used to demand that his toys were not bright plastic with flashing noises and lights. I wanted him to have quality wooden or material toys. Easier said than done: a) it's difficult to find quality, attractive and interesting wooden toys; and b) actually they're quite pricey!

So I completely understand how easy it is to fall into the plastic trap; batteries are good, lights and sounds make The Boy happy! Happy Boy = Happy Mummy! I do try and limit the environmental (and financial) impact of all these toys by buying them from my local baby and toddler group Nearly New Sales. Luckily, we normally comes up trumps and I can spend £15 and come home with over £100's worth of toys. Money for mummies, new toys for the Boy, good for the environment.

I've digressed haven't I? How unusual for me…

We are fortunate that hubby's parents always manage to produce the goods when it comes to finding really good quality wooden toys for their grandson. They have an independent toy store locally whose stock they are working their way through. I'd love to plug them, but I've forgotten their name. Bless them, they bought him a fabric Noah's Ark which was really adaptable, but he's never been that interested in squishy toys. However, the latest addition to his toyshop collection is this:

It's called an I'm Toy Fire Engine Work Bench and is fabulous. If we're going to someone's house for a visit (e.g. my parents' or sister's) it's the toy we take with us. There are so many 'bits' to it that it can keep him amused for ages. And it's going to last him for a good while yet because while he thinks the nuts and bolts are fab, he can't co-ordinate them at the moment. He gets the idea of how to use the screwdriver and spanner but he just points them at the nuts and bolts and thinks that makes them work. The hammer is extremely popular! Any hammer is extremely popular, which is why we're not showing him where we keep the key to the shed! He's completely got the idea of sorting the shapes through the holes and inserting the pegs into the holes.

Look at the concentration!

It is an excellent 'Boy's Toy' and if you've got a baby boy, I thoroughly recommend getting it. I've got to say that the range of toys available from I'm Toy are fantastic, quality toys that last. You can find a comprehensive range of I'm Toy erm, toys available through @Toyjeanius. What's pretty fab about her toy-shop is that she's a mum to 3 children who had so much fun playing with her children's toys that she decided to open up her own shop! How cool is that? Her rather gorgeous shop can be found here.

I have a special discount code for ToyJeanius which gives you 10% off your purchases! Simply type in TheBoyandMe at the checkout.

Maclaren Techno XLR

I recently contacted Maclaren via twitter to see if they were able to recommend a pushchair to replace my beautiful iCandy Cherry that The Boy is rapidly outgrowing. They suggested two, and that I pop to Mothercare to compare them and try them out. I did, and lo and behold, they sent me one out to review. I am incredibly grateful to them for this. My review shall be honest and thorough, but hopefully not boring!

Maclaren Techno XLR Stroller

Maclaren Techno XLR Stroller: in Coffee Brown and Soft Blue.

From the first moment that it's unpacked, it is obvious how much thought has been put into the ergonomics of this pushchair. With my last pushchair/pram combo, we spent an hour assembling everything. With this, you open the end of the box, pull it out and away you go. There is a comfortable and warm reversible seat-liner for use with foot-muff in Winter. It took me five minutes to undo the straps and attach it. [plus point for ease of assembly]

The Boy was champing at the bit to get at it. He liked it as much as I did. Straps were investigated straightaway and I was pleased with the results. He couldn't do them up. This is good because it means he can't undo them. The button on the five-point harness has to be pressed front and back to release the straps. [plus point for safety]

Test Drive 1

Test-ground: Urban
Weather: Dry, sunny but cold (2°c)

Without wishing to seem melodramatic, I was apprehensive. The current pushchair can be either forward or rear-facing, and I have The Boy facing me so we can talk. I don't know of any umbrella-folding pushchairs that are parent-facing; is it even possible? The clear plastic 'sunroof' in the hood does go a long way to assure parents that their child is happy. And actually he really liked not having to put up with me jabbering away at him, he was giving me a one-word running commentary on his surroundings: "tree, leaf, bird, Bobby (blackbird), gone, home, boy, boy, BOY! gone, home". You get the picture. [I'd prefer it facing me, but knowing that's not possible I'm more than placated with the 'sunroof']

We live in a predominantly Victorian town: tree-lined avenues, semi-detached houses with drives and proper 'paved' pavements. Pretty, but in reality a pain. The roots push the paving slabs up, and the pavements are full of rises and dips. There are dropped kerbs everywhere and those annoying gutter ridges down the pavements for surface water. The Maclaren copes well with all of these without getting stuck or having to manoeuvre it massively. Even the street that I normally do anything to avoid! [plus point for suspension]

The front wheels are lockable, I've yet to work out when that would be useful, but the steer-ability is brilliant. I have been known to have to excuse myself for crashing into items in the past with a "Oh sorry, I've not passed my test yet!" I'm normally very good at judging distance, but used to get caught out by the wheels on the iCandy; consequently some areas were a no-no. I used to have to open both doors at the entrance to the school where I work, and I once attempted the local corner shop, never again! The Techno fits through the doors with breathing space, and I managed to avoid playing dominoes with the bottles of cola in the shop! Excellent! [plus point for steer-ability]

I was able to put the few items (chocolate, shh!) that I bought into the handy pockets on the back. One of them is perfect for the rain-cover, the other (with a Velcro flap) is ideal to hold a purse, keys, phone, etc. The pockets are perfect for smaller purchases, especially as with our large (Boots/Pampers) change-bag in the shopping basket underneath, I couldn't fit them in as the front was a little difficult to access. I do walk up to the town centre frequently to do shopping, and I use the basket a lot, therefore for me it is an important feature. I wanted to buy a smaller change-bag anyway, which will free up more of the basket space. [plus point for the pockets]

Snuggly warm.

Overall, I'm really impressed with the pushchair: it's smart, compact, warm, easy to use and the manoeuvrability is amazing. I felt incredibly comfortable pushing it (I think I was actually walking faster, maybe I'll burn up extra calories?) and the height of the handles was perfect. The Boy was extremely comfortable tucked up inside it; he was warm and enjoyed seeing all the sights.

Thanks so much Maclaren, from The Boy and Me.

I intend to do a further review of this fabulous pushchair in a fortnight or so, having tried different 'terrains' and weather types.
