Getting Prehistoric With Dinosaur Train

Last month, Nick Jr started airing a new series which is quite a departure from the norm. Dinosaur Train is set in a prehistoric world of jungles, swamps, active volcanoes and oceans and full of wonderful characters designed to teach children about the living sciences.

Aimed at pre-schoolers, Dinosaur Train will help children discover new types of dinosaur species and compare and contrast dinosaurs to today's creatures. The main character is Buddy, a curious, funny, and intelligent T-Rex. When not playing with his siblings, Buddy is searching for the answers to his questions on the train.

Dinosaur Train is produced by The Jim Henson Company so it's bound to be a good'un! The half hour shows feature two episodes ideal for the attention span of a pre-schooler.

Dinosaur Train returns on Monday 9th April at 4pm on Nick Jr (Sky 615, Virgin 715, TalkTalk 318)

I was sent a preview disc for the purpose of this post, and some Nick Jr goodies for The Boy. My opinion is honest and unbiased and based on The Boy's reaction to the disc.

Easter Treats With Nick Jr

Last week I had my first ever genuine surprise parcel through the post, and it was such a lovely thing to receive.

This gorgeous box of Easte treats was from the very generous and lovely Nick Jr and contained a plethora of high quality chocolate and a very special Easter Egg in the form of an information pack about forthcoming special celebratory Nick Jr shows.

Not only was it a lovely parcel to receive but also it's come at a really good time. I'm at that stage with The Boy now where his taste in television programmes is changing. Gone is BabyTV and in has come Nick Jr alongside the stalwart of CBeebies. He has his preferred shows on the channel, mainly Peppa Pig, but also Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom and, of course, Team UmiZoomi: he's obsessed with it! However, the range of fun programmes on there is more than I had previously realised.

  • Over the Easter weekend, Team UmiZoomi will be showing The Umi City Egg Hunt. In the year since it launched it has over 4.4. million viewers and with it's mix of 2D and 3D animation, the math-powered superheroes are brilliant at helping live-action pre-schoolers solve everyday problems. In The Umi City Egg Hunt, the superheroes help their friend April to find the rainbow egg after it tumbles down a rabiit hole. We watched this together, and The Boy was captivated from start to finish emiting squeals of laughter and shrieks of 'there it is, there it is!'This special airs at 10.30am on Thursday 5th April and Sunday 8th April on Nick Jr.
  • The first lady of Nick Jr gets her own Easter special in the form of Dora's Easter Adventure. Dora and Boots await the Easter Bunny to bring his basket filled with eggs and treats for their big egg hunt, but just as he arrives the sneaky Swiper swoops in and does what he normally does! He throws it far away into the Rainbow Garden and it's their job to save the Easter treats from a watery end. Dora's Easter Adventure will be shown at 10am on Thursday 5th April and Sunday 8th April on Nick Jr.

Hope your little ones enjoy the Easter specials as much as mine did!

I was sent the above package as a surprise present from Nickleodeon. They haven't asked me to blog about it, but I've chosen to because I'm on the look out for Easter-themed programmes and thought you lot might be too!

Warburton's Breakfast

It's the most important meal of the day and that's why I find it so difficult to comprehend why my son is not better at eating his breakfast. He hasn't eaten in a full twelve hours beforehand and yet getting anything more than a half a bowl of cereal into him is an uphill struggle which, until the kettle has boiled and the first coffee been consumed, we are ill-equipped to deal with. Surely he's more hungry than he appears to be?

He turns his nose up at toast, a jam sandwich is left to go stale with just a few small sparrow-sized pecks out of it. I don't think that seven spoonfuls of ready brek is enough to keep him going until lunchtime.

That's why I was more than happy to receive samples of Warburton's new breakfast line through for review. Warburton's have introduced the most gorgeous range of brioches; rolls (butter and chocolate chip), loaves and swirls.

This is the brioche loaf (hot buttered) and the brioche swirl

Without exception, I have never seen The Boy eat breakfast better than he has the last few days. He's eating his cereal first and then having a brioche half an hour later, and wolfing it down!

Luckily he's sticking to the chocolate chip brioche rolls and loaf, which is just as well as it means I get to have the scrumptious and moist brioche swirls which have a fine layer of custard in them. Definitely moreish!

I was sent these products for the purpose of the review. My opinion is honest and unbiased, and based on the fact that I've had to buy more of these because The Boy is now eating breakfast!

The Most Amazing Easter Egg Ever!

I've made no secret of the fact that I am a big fan of Hotel Chocolat before. My husband knows it by now and he also knows that to get in my good books for special occasions he only need order something from there. He also knows not to eat any of the chocolate unless offered. And only then, the nut ones.

When a lovely big box arrived from them recently, he looked confused momentarily until he remembered that it was neither my birthday, nor Christmas, nor our anniversary. This delivery from them was in order to try out their easter egg samples.

And oh my, what a sample.

Isn't it pretty?

This is the Extra Thick Your Eggsellency Easter Egg which has twelve alcoholic truffles (two of each of white port truffle, champagne truffle, pink champagne truffle, mojito cocktail, amaretto amour, bison grass vodka) encased in the thickest easter egg I've ever seen; one half dark chocolate, one half milk chocolate. It is beautiful; the way it's presented and the taste of it.

When Hotel Chocolat were researching making easter eggs, the consulted with experts who told them to use the smallest amount of chocolate possible in order to make the thinnest chocolate eggs and maximise their profit margin. They ignored them and made really thick ones instead. And they are gorgeous!

At £26.00 each, the Extra Thick eggs are a luxury egg, but oh my you'd earn some massive brownie points with them!

I've Got Happy Feet!

A few years ago I sat down one Christmas and watched Happy Feet with my mum and dad, and Mr. TBaM with a baby The Boy asleep on his shoulder. It is one of those loveable, modern animated films which is good for all the family to enjoy; singing, dancing, cute penguins and an underlying ethical and green issue. The film had been a firm favourite of mine since release and we even have a dancing Mumble upstairs!

On Monday 26th March, Warner Brothers released Happy Feet 2 on DVD and they sent us a copy of it, along with the original and a few other bits and pieces, to review and enjoy.

The story behind this sequel features Mumble's son, Erik who has difficulty mustering the same enthusiasm to dance as his father has. Erik needs to work out his own place in the world of singing and dancing penguins, making new friends, learning some life lessons and encountering a few ecological issues of his own along the way.

The Boy and I settled down to watch Happy Feet 2 yesterday and he was instantly captivated by the dancing penguins in the opening scenes. With Pink as Gloria and the magic of computer animation, you can't really go wrong with the song and dance numbers, and The Boy laughed at the penguins singing and dancing their way through the film. I chuckled a great deal at seeing Brad Pitt as an out-of-luck krill and the cast of many did not disappoint throughout the film.

How can you go wrong with Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Alecia Moore (Pink), Brad Pitt and Matt Damon headlining the cast? I loved the humour, the very big green message woven throughout and the clever mix of live action filming and animation.

Happy Feet 2 is available from Monday March 26th 2012.

Peppa Pig Fun Phonics (Review)

When I was a child I adored Miss Piggy from The Muppets. Thirty years later and The Boy is just as enthusiastic about one of her relatives; Peppa Pig. He absolutely adores the antics of Peppa, George and everyone else in the family, and having visited Peppa Pig World twice last year, it served to feed his obsession.

He has another interest lately, letters. He's really fascinated by the alphabet and the letters all around him. This voyage of discovery of (numbers as well as) letters is amazing to see in action, he's spotting letters and numbers all around him: on traffic lights, street signs, posters, you name it, he sees them. He knows the letters in his name, can arrange them and write his own name.

Recently, I was asked if I The Boy would like to try the Inspiration Works Peppa Pig Fun Phonics, I jumped at the chance; it would fit the bill for two of his current obsessions!

As you can see from the picture, there are 26 letter keys and an alphabet, repeat and music button. The alphabet lights up the letters in turn and recites the 'phonics', the music button plays a tune. Of these three buttons the repeat button is the most useful. At the top of the console there is a pointer to change the activity being played to one of eight options:

  1. letters names and sounds (makes the sound associated with the picture for each button)
  2. phonics (says the letter sound)
  3. picture identification ("find the umbrella")
  4. initial letters ("find the first letter of the word …")
  5. phonics finder ("find the letter that says 'f' as in fish")
  6. spelling (press the buttons for the letters in identified word)
  7. follow-me (buttons light up and must be pressed in certain time limit)
  8. sounds (the sounds of the object associated with each letter)

I like this console, there's a lot of fun, educational activities in it and The Boy is having great fun looking for the letters. He's obviously quite young to be able to identify all letters of the alphabet but he's enjoying finding the letters of his own name, and finding 'm' and 'd' for mummy and daddy. He really likes the picture identification, sounds and the letter names functions. He keeps trying to have a go on the follow-me function but it's quite fast for his young reflexes at the moment. Having the pictures next to the letters makes some of the harder levels a lot easier for pre-schoolers to use.

And so to the one negative for me: the phonics. This is where, as a primary school teacher who has co-ordinated the teaching of Literacy previously, I have a problem.

My concern about this is that it doesn't actually use the correct phonics. Letter sounds nowadays are pronounced differently as to when I was a child, there is a bigger focus on the actual sound of the letters as taken as a snapshot of them in the context of a word. Anyone with a child in Reception or above knows what I'm talking about.

For example, we're used to the letter sounds: ah, buh, cuh, duh, eh, fuh, guh, etc. but that's not right, they aren't the correct phonics. Imagine the short 'b' sound as a ball bouncing quickly. Likewise it's not 'fuh' but 'ffff' as in 'fizz'. That 'uh' sound on letters is called a 'schwa', and quite frankly saying any letter with it is not going to help your child in the future when they learn to blend sounds to read.

And this, for me, is where this otherwise brilliant resource lets itself down. I'll continue to use it with The Boy but I'll be focusing on the  picture identification, initial letters and follow-me games, as I desperately try and get him to pronounce the phonics correctly in preparation for school in a year or so.

Peppa Pig Fun Phonics is made by Inspiration Works and available from Amazon

Easter Cookies, Baked By Me! (and The Boy)

As regular readers will know, The Boy and me I like cooking together. It's a great activity to do with little ones, offering them a wealth of experience, education, sensory stimulation and fun. We usually go for cakes, have dabbled in pizzas, but have never tried cookies before. When I was a teenager, I had an amazing recipe for cookies (but have since lost it) and any that I've tried have never come close on the moistness front.

Then I was sent a cookie mixture in a beautiful kilner jar by Baked By Me.

TOTS100 Book Club Review

I was nominated by the magnificent Mummy Mishaps to receive a copy of her favourite book on behalf of the TOTS100 Book Club. Knowing that I had identified reading a specific book on my list of Things To Do Before I'm 40, the cheeky minx put me down to have a copy of 'Pride and Prejudice'. I know what you're thinking; how has she not read it? But stop glaring at me; I've seen a couple of film versions, watched about 50% of the Colin Firth BBC adaptation, but can't get my head around the book. I will though now, because I like a challenge.

However, in tagging me I have had the baton passed to choose someone else to receive a copy of my favourite book; my must-read.

And so I choose Helen from The Crazy Kitchen, and the book that she's going to receive? See if you can work it out as I describe why I love it.

I first read this classic when I was given a copy of it by my great aunt. She had a horde of books that she insisted I read (one was Pride and Prejudice by the way!) and this one was the one that seemed easiest to me when I was 14 or 15. I was hooked very quickly, even if some of the themes in the book were a little too tricky for a young, innocent, teenage girl to digest.

I saw it performed in the New Theatre, Cardiff with Simon Williams as the male lead and Carmen Silvera as the formidable house-keeper, and was completely and utterly intoxicated by the power of the storyline.

Young girl meets a dashing gentleman with a sizeable fortune to his name. They fall in love in the stunning setting of Monte Carlo, wed and honeymoon there, before returning to his sprawling estate on the south coast of Cornwall where, as the new lady of the house, she has to instruct the staunch Mrs. Danvers. The new Mrs. de Winter must try and crawl out from the shadow of the previous, now deceased but still idolised, first wife to prove her worth as the mistress of Manderley.

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…

… is the classic opening line and from here the new Mrs. de Winter explains the tumultuous tale of love, history, death, intrigue, deceipt, mystery, skeletons and a spine-chilling web of lies that leads to an unimaginable ending.

I was on tenderhooks 'til the very last line and had to re-read many sections of the book again and again because I was astonished. Daphne de Maurier was a spell-bindingly amazing writer and this is one of the best books I have ever read.

Therefore I nominate Helen to receive 'Rebecca' by Daphne de Maurier!

A Cheep-er Easter

Easter is one of those excellent time for crafts with the tiddlers, and they can go through a fair amount of resources at this time of year. Poundland have an excellent range of Easter goodies in stock at the moment, ranging from creating an entire Easter bonnet to all the decorations to making your own puppets.

They very kindly sent us some of their craft ideas so that we could have a go at making some Easter cards and a bag for a treasure hunt.

Last year we had an Easter hunt in the garden, and although we are away for the weekend this year, I'll still be doing one around our accommodation both inside and out. I will definitely need some of the bright plastic eggs that they have, mini-eggs and of course the obligatory Easter chicks.

At only £1 per item, you can't go wrong! Go and bag yourself a bargain today.

I was sent these items for the purpose of this post. My opinion is honest and unbiased.

Review: Albelli

Albelli is one of the largest European producers of photobooks. Recently they have expanded into producing other photo gifts; calendars, greeting cards, diaries, acrylic prints and canvas prints.

When I was asked if I'd like to try one of their products I jumped at the chance of getting a canvas print made for my mum. Unfortunately I'm a little bit late to the game for Mothers' Day with this as I've only just remembered to order it! However, I have just gone ahead and ordered one which I will give her for Easter instead. As she can't have chocolate, I try to find her alternatives gifts to spoil her and what better than a photo of her youngest grandchild, that she took?

It took me just four, very simple clicks to get from the home page to the point where I had selected my photo for the correct sized canvas, as below.

On this page I had the nifty option to turn my print into a black and white, a sepia or keep it colour. I've kept it saturated as my mum loves the flush of The Boy's cheeks. I also was able to zoom in on the frame, or easily select another size to use.

I've used quite a few canvas facilities now, this is honestly the easiest and has even taken over from my previous favourite photo-processing online store. Just the sheer ease of ordering has amazed me: the entire process took less than four minutes from landing on the homepage to submitting my order and paying. Nothing was difficult to understand, the site is clear, bright and incredibly user-friendly.

The 30x40cm canvas that I have ordered costs £34.95 (excluding P&P) which is an average cost for canvasses these days. When it arrives I'll be able to better judge the quality, but I'm pretty sure that, if present experience is anything to go off, it will be very good quality.

I must just flag up this aspect of the Albelli website. They have an 'Inspiration' tab which takes you to a variety of different ideas for unique aspect photo products. I really like this idea for a photobook and will definitely be remembering it for the future with The Boy's art work!

It will certainly save on all those piles of paper lying around!

I was given a code to purchase a product from Albelli. My opinions of the ordering process is honest and unbiased.
