Bridging The Gap Between Childhood Dreams And Adult Realities

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? More to the point, did that childhood dream correspond to your adult reality? If not, why not? Was your childhood wish really so unrealistic? Was it voiced, taken seriously, encouraged, and pursued? Or was it laughed off as just another childhood fantasy that will dissipate along with the belief in Father Christmas or the Tooth Fairy?

Here's an even better question: What about your own children right now? What are their dreams? Do you even know what they want to be when they grow up? Are you encouraging them to voice their dreams? Are you taking it seriously, and encouraging hem to pursue it? Or, are you just laughing it off as just another childhood fantasy? [Read more…]

Loom Bands Twister Kit (Giveaway)

I was determined that loom bands would not enter this house, and I managed to hold off until mid August of this year when we bought a box to create with on a long car journey. For two hours we sat in the back of the car making our first loom band, and there wasn't even the slightest request for the iPad or a DVD to be put on.

Clearly something so creative which helps develop concentration and fine motor skills isn't such an evil thing after all?

Back To School: Waterproof Clothing

Anyone who knows me and the activities featured on this blog will know that as far as I'm concerned, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing."

I'm pleased that The Boy's school also follows this philosophy, significantly helped by the introduction of the Foundation Phase a few years ago. Last week a letter came home requesting waterproof gear was sent in as he would be outdoors in all weather conditions, so I want to share with you the items I'll be sending in for him to get his fresh air and outdoor play every day.

We might have had fun with a hose whilst testing!

365 #37

Welcome to 365 Photo A Day Project linky. This linky covers round-up posts for the week or one of your favourite photos of the week. I've written a post providing tips for completing the project, always ask one of the regulars for help if you're stuck.

The 365 linky only works because of people linking to it and then contributing their thoughts to others' posts via comments. I can't emphasise this enough, it's the whole point of the linky!

Join in by entering the URL of your favourite photograph of the week (either a 52 or a 365 photo) and show some comment love to everyone else in the community. We've got a Facebook group, and now I've created a collaborative Pinterest board (if you'd like to collaborate, let me know and I'll add you).

  1. Choose your favourite photo from the past week and link it up below.
  2. Please add the badge to your linked-up post so that other people know how to find all the other fabulous entries.
  3. If you can spare five minutes to comment on a few other entries I know they'd appreciate it!

Does Mum Really Know Best? Old Wives' Tales Debunked (Guest Post)

For centuries, mums have just been saying the strangest things – weird sayings, old wives' tales, or superstitious beliefs that have been passed down for generations that you wouldn't dare question, because Mum would give you the "look" if you dared to ever challenge her. A lot of these superstitions revolved around health, whether it be a remedy or just preventative measures to take so that you wouldn't get sick. For the most part, we all grew to be healthy adults, so it seemed that maybe mum knew what she was talking about… but DID SHE REALLY? It is time to finally debunk some of these myths.

O is for… (Alphabet Champions)

One of The Boy's favourite games to play is 'Eye-Spy'. And putting aside the internal groans that every parents experiences when this game is mentioned, it is a wonderful activity to help promote literacy skills and children's phonological awareness. Identifying the initial letter or sound of a word (onset) is so important to help children with their spellings, and it's good fun too!

We've been challenged by Innocent Smoothies to find something which depicts a specific letter of the alphabet, using the new set of magnets available on promotional packs.
