The Most Amazing Easter Egg Ever!
I've made no secret of the fact that I am a big fan of Hotel Chocolat before. My husband knows it by now and he also knows that to get in my good books for special occasions he only need order something from there. He also knows not to eat any of the chocolate unless offered. And only then, the nut ones.
When a lovely big box arrived from them recently, he looked confused momentarily until he remembered that it was neither my birthday, nor Christmas, nor our anniversary. This delivery from them was in order to try out their easter egg samples.
And oh my, what a sample.
Isn't it pretty?
This is the Extra Thick Your Eggsellency Easter Egg which has twelve alcoholic truffles (two of each of white port truffle, champagne truffle, pink champagne truffle, mojito cocktail, amaretto amour, bison grass vodka) encased in the thickest easter egg I've ever seen; one half dark chocolate, one half milk chocolate. It is beautiful; the way it's presented and the taste of it.
When Hotel Chocolat were researching making easter eggs, the consulted with experts who told them to use the smallest amount of chocolate possible in order to make the thinnest chocolate eggs and maximise their profit margin. They ignored them and made really thick ones instead. And they are gorgeous!
At £26.00 each, the Extra Thick eggs are a luxury egg, but oh my you'd earn some massive brownie points with them!
I've Got Happy Feet!
A few years ago I sat down one Christmas and watched Happy Feet with my mum and dad, and Mr. TBaM with a baby The Boy asleep on his shoulder. It is one of those loveable, modern animated films which is good for all the family to enjoy; singing, dancing, cute penguins and an underlying ethical and green issue. The film had been a firm favourite of mine since release and we even have a dancing Mumble upstairs!
On Monday 26th March, Warner Brothers released Happy Feet 2 on DVD and they sent us a copy of it, along with the original and a few other bits and pieces, to review and enjoy.
The story behind this sequel features Mumble's son, Erik who has difficulty mustering the same enthusiasm to dance as his father has. Erik needs to work out his own place in the world of singing and dancing penguins, making new friends, learning some life lessons and encountering a few ecological issues of his own along the way.
The Boy and I settled down to watch Happy Feet 2 yesterday and he was instantly captivated by the dancing penguins in the opening scenes. With Pink as Gloria and the magic of computer animation, you can't really go wrong with the song and dance numbers, and The Boy laughed at the penguins singing and dancing their way through the film. I chuckled a great deal at seeing Brad Pitt as an out-of-luck krill and the cast of many did not disappoint throughout the film.
How can you go wrong with Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Alecia Moore (Pink), Brad Pitt and Matt Damon headlining the cast? I loved the humour, the very big green message woven throughout and the clever mix of live action filming and animation.
Happy Feet 2 is available from Monday March 26th 2012.

Snap!
When I was a child I used to love watching my father and grandfather taking photos, discussing lenses, pouring over the technical aspects of their cameras. It used to drive my mum mad, but I was intrigued. Despite her frustration, mum gave me my first compact camera (film obviously!) when I was about ten and dad set to teaching me how to take photos. He bought me a few SLRs from car boot sales over the years and I learnt a bit, but overall I stuck to the automatic settings.
When I started going out with Mr. TBaM and met my (then) future mother-in-law, she passed on her old Nikon SLR and refreshed my memory of the techniques. Within a few years I'd treated myself to a digital SLR, a Canon EOS 300D, which I still have and use to take the vast majority of my photos.
I love taking photos, I have thousands and thousands of photos taken from June 2009 (The Boy's birth) and I take tens each day; on the iPod, my phone, my dSLR, hubby's compact or even The Boy's Kiddizoom, I use whatever's to hand. Starting my 365 project last year reminded me about the basics of composition, framing, light, etc. and then the fabulous picnik.com (now replaced in my affection by picmonkey.com) helped develop my editing skills.
Why am I telling you all this geeky stuff?
Because to my complete and utter amazement I've been shortlisted in the Britmums Brilliant In Blogging awards. Me! I never get anything like this, I'm a background person. It has meant the absolute world to me that people either a) liked my photos enough, b) felt I represented a good photography blogger or c) felt bloody sorry for me, enough to nominate me.
You see, I just take photos of my son and our life. That anyone likes them amazes me. That people liked them enough to join me in #Project366 astounded me (the response each week is flabberghasting!). But to nominate me in amongst the big players? A serious thank you to every single one of you, it has meant the world to me.
I don't expect to win, have you seen who else is nominated?! However, I just want to share a few photos that I am really proud of for one reason or another, and if you agree with me, please consider voting for me by pressing the button at the bottom of the post.
This is the only time I'll ask, I've been stung by voting competition before and I refuse to get drawn in to it all. I'll tweet this a few times but it's your decision to make.
Thank you!
Peppa Pig Fun Phonics (Review)
When I was a child I adored Miss Piggy from The Muppets. Thirty years later and The Boy is just as enthusiastic about one of her relatives; Peppa Pig. He absolutely adores the antics of Peppa, George and everyone else in the family, and having visited Peppa Pig World twice last year, it served to feed his obsession.
He has another interest lately, letters. He's really fascinated by the alphabet and the letters all around him. This voyage of discovery of (numbers as well as) letters is amazing to see in action, he's spotting letters and numbers all around him: on traffic lights, street signs, posters, you name it, he sees them. He knows the letters in his name, can arrange them and write his own name.
Recently, I was asked if I The Boy would like to try the Inspiration Works Peppa Pig Fun Phonics, I jumped at the chance; it would fit the bill for two of his current obsessions!
As you can see from the picture, there are 26 letter keys and an alphabet, repeat and music button. The alphabet lights up the letters in turn and recites the 'phonics', the music button plays a tune. Of these three buttons the repeat button is the most useful. At the top of the console there is a pointer to change the activity being played to one of eight options:
- letters names and sounds (makes the sound associated with the picture for each button)
- phonics (says the letter sound)
- picture identification ("find the umbrella")
- initial letters ("find the first letter of the word …")
- phonics finder ("find the letter that says 'f' as in fish")
- spelling (press the buttons for the letters in identified word)
- follow-me (buttons light up and must be pressed in certain time limit)
- sounds (the sounds of the object associated with each letter)
I like this console, there's a lot of fun, educational activities in it and The Boy is having great fun looking for the letters. He's obviously quite young to be able to identify all letters of the alphabet but he's enjoying finding the letters of his own name, and finding 'm' and 'd' for mummy and daddy. He really likes the picture identification, sounds and the letter names functions. He keeps trying to have a go on the follow-me function but it's quite fast for his young reflexes at the moment. Having the pictures next to the letters makes some of the harder levels a lot easier for pre-schoolers to use.
And so to the one negative for me: the phonics. This is where, as a primary school teacher who has co-ordinated the teaching of Literacy previously, I have a problem.
My concern about this is that it doesn't actually use the correct phonics. Letter sounds nowadays are pronounced differently as to when I was a child, there is a bigger focus on the actual sound of the letters as taken as a snapshot of them in the context of a word. Anyone with a child in Reception or above knows what I'm talking about.
For example, we're used to the letter sounds: ah, buh, cuh, duh, eh, fuh, guh, etc. but that's not right, they aren't the correct phonics. Imagine the short 'b' sound as a ball bouncing quickly. Likewise it's not 'fuh' but 'ffff' as in 'fizz'. That 'uh' sound on letters is called a 'schwa', and quite frankly saying any letter with it is not going to help your child in the future when they learn to blend sounds to read.
And this, for me, is where this otherwise brilliant resource lets itself down. I'll continue to use it with The Boy but I'll be focusing on the picture identification, initial letters and follow-me games, as I desperately try and get him to pronounce the phonics correctly in preparation for school in a year or so.
Peppa Pig Fun Phonics is made by Inspiration Works and available from Amazon
I was sent this product for the purpose of this review, my opinion is honest and unbiased.

Meal Planning Monday #3
My third week of meal planning and it's going well! I'm finding that I'm actually considering the food that we already have in the freezer more, debating the easy days, making more of an effort with my cooking and am less consumed by the whole concept of food. And I've stuck to it so far!
- Sunday: slow-cooked pork (which I'd picked up the night before in Tesco in the reduced section!) in a honey and mustard sauce, with mushroom, carrots and leek. This was only for Mr. TBaM as The Boy doesn't like proper meat at the moment, and I'm veggie. It took three hours to cook on high and he informs me that it was cooked to perfection. I added some cornflour to the juices left over to make gravy. I had a red onion, leek and cheese plait (Linda McCartney in Asda) and The Boy had codcake and peas.
- Monday: Pea and mint risotto cake (Asda have expanded their veggie range lately) and what I call 'Bulgarian salad' (feta cheese, tomato and cucumber chopped. It was the regional dish when I stayed in Bulgaria on an educational programme a few years ago. In 4 days I ate 9 portions because there was nothing else for a veggie in rural Bulgaria to eat!)
- Tuesday: Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie. I'll be doing the mince and vegetables for this in the slow cooker. I'm told that veggie mince needs a lot of liquid in a slow cooker, which makes sense. I haven't cooked veggie in there before but I'm guessing that as the mince is reconstituted mushrooms and par-cooked anyway it won't need more than a few hours to cook. It'll mainly be the vegetables that will need the cooking. It might be counter-productive but I'll be doing the potatoes as normal.
- Wednesday: slow-cooked vegetable soup. It's a work day so I'll prep all the veg the night before and then ask mum or hubby (home on garden leave) to turn the slow-cooker on mid-morning. Hopefully it should be cooked nicely by the time I get in. I might try some red lentils in it, any tips welcome.
- Thursday: A work day so an easy meal needed: meatballs and spaghetti! Unsure whether trying this in the slow-cooker would be pointless? Maybe I'm getting over-excited.
- Friday: Butternut squash and spinach lasagne. Not sure if I've got any portions left in the freezer, if not I'll make a new one.
- Saturday: Chinese! This will be my last Nearly New Sale as the co-ordinator because I don't have the time or the inclination for it anymore. The Boy is coming up to nursery age and if I don't have another child then my time in the toddler group will be coming to an end. Aside from that I've now co-ordinated four sales and they are all encompassing and tiring. There's new blood in the group, they can do it! I'll be out from 10am to 6.30pm and will be shattered, so a take-away is in order. The Chinese we used to use had a 0 rating on food hygiene, and I can't find another one who makes dee-fried tofu like I like it, so last weekend I made up a batch for the freezer. Mr. TBaM can go and get the remaining egg fried rice, chips, crispy seaweed and spring rolls, yummy!

My BritMums Live Sponsor!
A little while ago, I mentioned that I was lucky enough to be able to go to BritMums Live this year. Last year I made the decision that I wouldn't attend Cybermummy as I felt it would be too like an INSET day. However, that was a month or two into my blogging life, and by the time June came around, I was insanely jealous of anyone who went and hung off every tweet with the relevant hashtag. I made the decision there and then that come hell or high water I'd be going this year.
And I am.
And so is Mr. TheBoyandMe and The Boy.
Quite frankly the idea of two days and two nights away from them is too much to bear, and so I decided that I'd be taking them with me. On the Saturday, the boys can go and play at the Science Museum while I chat, socialise and get drunk network and develop my blogging ability with the creme de la creme of the blogging world. I can't wait to meet all of my twitter and blogging friends, some for the first time, some I'm friends with in the 'real world'.
I was discussing attending the conference with one of the lovely people that I have regularly reviewed for, who I consider a good friend. She asked me details about it and I explained the ethos behind it. It was at this point that she offered to sponsor me to attend! I very happily accepted sponsorship for the ticket, and would therefore like to present my BritMums Live sponsor:
I am so proud to be representing the best online toy shop that there is! Toyjeanius sells amazing wooden baby and toddler toys, traditional games and fabric role-play accessories that are second to none, items that you wouldn't find in the average high-street toy store. The Boy has always loved the toys that Jean has sent for him to review, be it threading cards from Djeco or the Pally Pirate Noah ship from I'm Toy. Jean is a friendly, caring and hardworking mum who is so interested and fascinated with quality children's toys that she set her own online shop up. I always have an image of her playing with the Haba foods in her kitchen!
So thanks to ToyJeanius, you'll be seeing me at BritMums Live! I may be sporting an owl costume to go with the usual green face and yellow antennae, but I'll be there!
Readers of this blog can gain a 10% discount at ToyJeanius through using the code 'TheBoyandMe' at the checkout!
(It's at this point that I'd like to highlight that I agreed to only accept sponsorship for the ticket; I didn't want to take advantage of Jean's generosity and friendship by having her pay for the hotel and transport fees for my entire family. That's why you've seen so many sponsored posts on here recently, writing those has paid for the other costs.)
