Photo Editing Made Easy

About this time last year I discovered an amazing online photo editing website called Picnik.com. Simple to use, effective and with a plethora of editing options, I soon subscribed to it and no photo was uploaded onto my blog without having the special Picnik treatment (Ortonish to 50% fade and 1960s to 80%). It was so easy to use as photos were uploaded directly from your computer, auto-adjusted on the click of a button, there was a sliding scale of the strength of the filters applied and a variety of frames to be added. For a special occasion, text and extra clipart could be added. One of the most used features for me was the collage function, and I used it to create every page in my 365 book. The $20ish a year subscription was worth it, especially as I could access it from any computer that had web access.

Then in January of this year, the ever-increasingly arrogant Google announced it was closing Picnik (they had bought it last year) and moving some of the functionality to Google+. Gah! Damn Google+, I didn't have an account, didn't want one and was determined I would not play ball. (I ended up registering one just to see what the fuss was about, then a month later had a warning from them to remove my account, which I did happily, as apparently TheBoy andMe is not a real name. And of course Will.I.Am is)

And then the lovely @EmsyJo told me that there was a successor to Picnik, and it was to be called PicMonkey.

As you can see from the screenshot, it's a cleaner homepage, more sophisticated and a damn sight quicker to use. The three photos up there are sample images to play around with the photo editing options, top left is where a photo (just the one upload at a time for the moment) can be opened or dragged to be edited. And it's really, really quick!

Once in on the main programme there is a simple selection panel on the left-hand side (as with Picnik) and the picture displays in the main window. The main difference for me is when it comes to ease of saving; click the button in the bottom left hand corner, type the file name and about a second later it is saved. No waiting more than ten seconds for it to save.

The marvellous developers behind the phenomenal PicMonkey are actually some of the original engineers behind Picnik so they understand what we want, they know how it all works and they know how to make it better! And it really is.And it's getting better all the time as they work to improve it (before 19th April when Picnik closes).

I'm a huge fan of it already and I wanted to share why. I've taken one of my standard photos from last year and applied some of my favourite filters along with some new additions to their catalogue to it to show what it can do.

There's a great selection of filters to apply, I've featured about half of them. Of course you can also layer them to achieve greater results. Some of the new filters have a crown watermark on them which I am presuming means that they will become part of the possible future subscription service. However, at present there is no sign up and no fee.

The only irony is that unfortunately at the moment PicMonkey don't have the collage function and so I had to use Picnik!

Sponsored Video: Goodies Galore

Our weeks are busy. I work part-time and am home on a Monday and a Tuesday, work Wednesday to Friday. Then weekends are filled with us trying to spend time as a family and enjoying each other. It means that we seem to be constantly on the go here, there and everywhere.

Taking part in activities and playgroups is easier now that The Boy is getting older because he's slightly less dependant on a routine with food and naps, there is always leeway with meal times now as long as I don't push it.

One of the things that I always have now in my significantly reduced changebag handbag (along with wetwipes and pants, no nappies anymore) is  several snack bars and a couple of boxes of raisins. He rarely asks for the raisins because he always wants to top up on the snack bars. And who can blame him because Organix Goodie bars are delicious. He prefers the raspberry and apple soft oaty bars, and I'm a little partial too. With no salt, processed sugars, colourings or flavourings, you can be assured that they aren't pumping our precious little ones full of nasties.

Getting Prehistoric With Dinosaur Train

Last month, Nick Jr started airing a new series which is quite a departure from the norm. Dinosaur Train is set in a prehistoric world of jungles, swamps, active volcanoes and oceans and full of wonderful characters designed to teach children about the living sciences.

Aimed at pre-schoolers, Dinosaur Train will help children discover new types of dinosaur species and compare and contrast dinosaurs to today's creatures. The main character is Buddy, a curious, funny, and intelligent T-Rex. When not playing with his siblings, Buddy is searching for the answers to his questions on the train.

Dinosaur Train is produced by The Jim Henson Company so it's bound to be a good'un! The half hour shows feature two episodes ideal for the attention span of a pre-schooler.

Dinosaur Train returns on Monday 9th April at 4pm on Nick Jr (Sky 615, Virgin 715, TalkTalk 318)

I was sent a preview disc for the purpose of this post, and some Nick Jr goodies for The Boy. My opinion is honest and unbiased and based on The Boy's reaction to the disc.

Crafty Corner: Easter Cards

Last week I went into school on the Wednesday intending to teach my Wednesday morning Year One class R.E. and ended up making Easter cards with them; a change that I was all too happy to make. I'm much happier helping the five and six year olds make cards for their mummies and daddies than waffling on about the role of authority figures.

This is what we ended up making together, all I did for them was the springs which the eggs were mounted on.

I loved the simplicity of the cards and how much of it was done by the children, so I decided to adapt the idea to make Easter cards with The Boy.

I cut out some small egg shapes, grabbed a handful of cotton buds, some paint and sponges, coloured sticky strips and off we went.

The Boy coped really well with using the cotton buds to dot the paint on and absolutely loved the sponges (chicken and sheep) to dab the paint on. In fact he got carried away and sponge printed all over the table.

And that's when it descended into chaos. You see The Boy doesn't like getting messy and I decided to use a little sensory play and painting without brushes (inspired by The Nurture Store) to try and cure him of it.

Look at that face in the last picture, butter wouldn't melt!

Oh and the cards?

They turned out ok didn't they?

I'm linking this up to the fabulous Kids Art Explorers on The Nurture Store, pop over and check out the other link-ups.

Easter Treats With Nick Jr

Last week I had my first ever genuine surprise parcel through the post, and it was such a lovely thing to receive.

This gorgeous box of Easte treats was from the very generous and lovely Nick Jr and contained a plethora of high quality chocolate and a very special Easter Egg in the form of an information pack about forthcoming special celebratory Nick Jr shows.

Not only was it a lovely parcel to receive but also it's come at a really good time. I'm at that stage with The Boy now where his taste in television programmes is changing. Gone is BabyTV and in has come Nick Jr alongside the stalwart of CBeebies. He has his preferred shows on the channel, mainly Peppa Pig, but also Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom and, of course, Team UmiZoomi: he's obsessed with it! However, the range of fun programmes on there is more than I had previously realised.

  • Over the Easter weekend, Team UmiZoomi will be showing The Umi City Egg Hunt. In the year since it launched it has over 4.4. million viewers and with it's mix of 2D and 3D animation, the math-powered superheroes are brilliant at helping live-action pre-schoolers solve everyday problems. In The Umi City Egg Hunt, the superheroes help their friend April to find the rainbow egg after it tumbles down a rabiit hole. We watched this together, and The Boy was captivated from start to finish emiting squeals of laughter and shrieks of 'there it is, there it is!'This special airs at 10.30am on Thursday 5th April and Sunday 8th April on Nick Jr.
  • The first lady of Nick Jr gets her own Easter special in the form of Dora's Easter Adventure. Dora and Boots await the Easter Bunny to bring his basket filled with eggs and treats for their big egg hunt, but just as he arrives the sneaky Swiper swoops in and does what he normally does! He throws it far away into the Rainbow Garden and it's their job to save the Easter treats from a watery end. Dora's Easter Adventure will be shown at 10am on Thursday 5th April and Sunday 8th April on Nick Jr.

Hope your little ones enjoy the Easter specials as much as mine did!

I was sent the above package as a surprise present from Nickleodeon. They haven't asked me to blog about it, but I've chosen to because I'm on the look out for Easter-themed programmes and thought you lot might be too!

Warburton's Breakfast

It's the most important meal of the day and that's why I find it so difficult to comprehend why my son is not better at eating his breakfast. He hasn't eaten in a full twelve hours beforehand and yet getting anything more than a half a bowl of cereal into him is an uphill struggle which, until the kettle has boiled and the first coffee been consumed, we are ill-equipped to deal with. Surely he's more hungry than he appears to be?

He turns his nose up at toast, a jam sandwich is left to go stale with just a few small sparrow-sized pecks out of it. I don't think that seven spoonfuls of ready brek is enough to keep him going until lunchtime.

That's why I was more than happy to receive samples of Warburton's new breakfast line through for review. Warburton's have introduced the most gorgeous range of brioches; rolls (butter and chocolate chip), loaves and swirls.

This is the brioche loaf (hot buttered) and the brioche swirl

Without exception, I have never seen The Boy eat breakfast better than he has the last few days. He's eating his cereal first and then having a brioche half an hour later, and wolfing it down!

Luckily he's sticking to the chocolate chip brioche rolls and loaf, which is just as well as it means I get to have the scrumptious and moist brioche swirls which have a fine layer of custard in them. Definitely moreish!

I was sent these products for the purpose of the review. My opinion is honest and unbiased, and based on the fact that I've had to buy more of these because The Boy is now eating breakfast!
