Roary The Racing Car At The Silverstone Classic

I keep tweeting about how I need to sit down and write our Summer calendar, but I keep putting it off. I'm not entirely sure why, other than it's slightly alarming tying all the different bits and pieces together.

However, this weekend we're kicking off our six weeks of fun (come rain or sun) with a trip to somewhere that my dad is currently sulking about me visiting. Despite me having protested to him for the best part of my entire speaking life, that I am a girl and not a boy, and that I have zero interest in Formula One, this weekend we find ourselves going to the Silverstone Classic.

My dad's really sulking, big time!

The Silverstone Classic is a huge family event taking place over the course of this weekend in the home of the British Grand Prix and motor racing. Aside from the plethora of classic cars being exhibited, there are a whole host of other activities, many centred on the younger audience.

  • Children over 12 years or 1.5m in height can experience free taster driving lessons, hot laps on the Stowe Circuit, an F1 driving simulator, a giant Scalextric racetrack, and live racing action on the big screen.
  • There's a Big top and funfair with dodgems (for more racing!)
  • A celebrity challenge motor race featuring the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart, Brendan Cole (Strictly Come Dancing), soccer legend Steve Bull, TV presenter Andrew Castle, and a whole lot more.

But the bit that we're going for, the bit that we can't wait to show The Boy is Roary the Racing Car and his mechanic Big Chris, who will be there all weekend. From 10am – 5pm, young visitors will be given the chance to meet Roary and Big Chris in the big top, and cut their racing-driver teeth on an exciting Roary push car inflatable racing track. And on the Sunday (when we're going), Roary and Chris will be taking part in a live Roary the Racing Car stage show.

An event like this is something that little boy's dreams are made of, and as The Boy is becoming quite obsessed with his Hot Wheels cars, I know he's going to enjoy the experience immensely.

Full details of the 2012 Silverstone Classic powered by the AA (including tickets) are available via the event’s official www.silverstoneclassic.com website.

Don’t forget to tune in and see Roary the Racing Car every morning at 8.30am on Five’s Milkshake! For more information on Roary the Racing Car, please log onto www.roarytheracingcar.com or become a fan on Facebook.

I have been sent two tickets for the purpose of the review I will be writing.

The Gallery: Planes, Trains & Automobiles

I have a small obsession that I've kept hidden until now. However, when Tara announced last Friday that The Gallery theme this week would be:

Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Basically transport; that can be bicycles, motorbikes, camper vans, motor homes or jet skis. Interpret it any way you like and then come back and let's get that motor running.

I let out a little squeal and knew that it was time for my obsession to be revealed.

You know those 50p ride-ons at supermarkets? Yeah, it's those.

I'm not quite sure why I'm obsessed with them, I'm not even sure there were that many around when I was a nipper, but I think it stems from not going on them very much as a child. Who knows? All I do know is that I have to keep a stash of 50p coins in a separate section in my purse!

And this is why…

The truly scary thing is that this is only about half the photos…

I think I need help, please send it in the form of 50p coins.

Sponsored Video: A TomTom Summer in Cape Verde

Rubbish, isn't it?

It's the 16th July and we're supposed to be in the height of Summer, yet my heating is on and thermostat is set at 22°C because it's that cold.

July.

Summer.

By this time last year, we were spending every weekend on the beach of south Wales, building sandcastles, having picnics, padding in the sea, applying factor 50 sunscreen to our golden skin to ensure the blazing sun didn't burn us. And today? Today I went out with a waterproof mac and boots on, sporting a golfing umbrella that I couldn't keep upright because of the strength of the wind.

And despite having vowed that we would not be taking The Boy abroad until the age of 5 years because I can't stand the stress, I am finding myself entertaining the thought of a weekend in Barcelona where I know it will be warm and sunny, and I can remember what it feels like with the sun caressing your skin.

Sigh.

Which is why the concept of spending two weeks on a tropical island like Cape Verde is so enticing. And even better would be to receive €10,000 for the priviledge of doing so. Sounds heavenly doesn't it?

TomTom have launched a competition for five families (or groups of friends) to map various islands for them, this week's is Cape Verde. Successful families will need to explore Cape Verde in a specially equipped mapping car. And although no mapping experience is needed, a love of visiting rainforests, banana and coconut plantations is, along with an enjoyment of great weather. This mapping field work will take anything from a day to two weeks depending on how much time is spent sunbathing, swimming or exploring!

For more information about the competition visit the TomTom Summer site.

Elderflower Season With bottlegreen

When I was pregnant with The Boy, one of the few things that kept me going through the five months of nonstop nausea was fizzy, sweet drinks. Obviously I didn't want my teeth to fall out so seriously limited my intake of cola drinks and the healthier, gentler drink which really helped to settle my stomach was elderflower spritzer. bottlegreen was my brand of choice because the taste was far superior to many imitators out there, and three years later it's still one of my favourite drinks.

This Summer, bottlegreen have launched a limited edition design on their elderflower cordial and pressé bottles. The frosted white and green print it eye catching and very attractive, it certain makes it more attractive to put on the dinner table for Summer lunches, especially if we're (ever able to) sit outside on the weekend with friends and family. Light and refreshing, the pressé is my favourite (non-alcoholic) Summer drink.

bottlegreen limited edition elderflower is available from all major supermarkets. The pressé is £2.39 and the cordial from £3.15.

I was sent a bottle of each for the purpose of this post.

"Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes" Wii (Review)

As a departure from the normal films that we are sent from Warner Bros. to review, we were recently sent a Lego Batman package in order to review the newly released Lego Batman 2 on Wii. Inside the box was a copy of the game, alongside a selection of Lego Batman themed goodies to keep The Boy amused.

However, while The Boy is busy pretending to be the caped crusader and playing with his first ever Lego, it's over to Mr. TBaM for the actual game review:

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (to give it its full title) is the latest in a long line of LEGO console games, and features a whole host of Warner Brothers characters – not just Batman, Robin and all their baddies, but even Lex Luthor and Superman himself.

We were fortunate enough to be sent the Wii version of LB2, and from the start two things were obvious: firstly, due to its '7' PEGI rating this is not a game for The Boy, this is definitely Daddy's plaything; and secondly a lot of time had been taken making sure that the game impressed from the outset.

The scale of the game is simply immense. Starting out chasing after the Joker after he interrupted the Man of the Year awards, and then reducing numerous other villains along the way into their constituent blocks, you are taken out into Gotham City and then the wider world.

The gameplay can be confusing initially, especially for somebody new to the LEGO genre, and good coordination is definitely  needed as the Wii version requires both the Wii remote and the nunchuck controller. The graphics also suffer slightly in comparison to the PS3 and Xbox versions simply due to the greater graphical capabilities of the latter consoles.

The positives far outweigh these minor niggles, though. The game is fast-moving and the challenges of each section are so different that there's no danger of boredom through having to simply follow sets of repetitive moves. With a reported minimum of eight hours just to reach the end of the game – and countless more in finding all the hidden elements – this is certainly a value-for-money investment as the long and potentially waterlogged Summer break approaches.

Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes is available to buy for the Wii from Game for £23.99

Hot Wheels Wall Tracks 'Mid-Air Madness' (Review)

Last September I was given the opportunity by Mattel to test and review their new Hot Wheels Wall Tracks system. At the time I was incredibly impressed at the system and the fact that it was wall mounted and removable, which meant that it didn't take over my entire house but was always there to be played with, by all members of the (extended) family! I wanted The Boy to have a car system but so many of them are restrictive in their layout and take up so much space, the Hot Wheels Wall Tracks doesn't, which is why we've since bought three add on sets and regularly change them around without any issue.

A month or two ago, I was asked if I'd like to review the new Hot Wheels Wall Tracks Mid Air Madness I considered it for about one second before gleefully typing 'yes please!'.

The Hot Wheels Wall Tracks Mid Air Madness is a section of the Hot Wheels track that loops around on itself to run continuously. Now those engineer-type people will be wondering how that can happen without some form of help, and you'd be right. There is a turbo-booster which launches cars up into the air to be caught by the highest point of the ramp before coasting down, crossing another gap and starting all over again! A true feat of anti-gravity defiance!

We absolutely love this track; it's a valuable, albeit slightly noisy, add-on to what was already a fantastic toy. Every child (old and young) who comes in is captivated and mesmerised by it and it's really enhanced the system. If you want to make your own little Hot Wheels fan happy, invest the £20+/- and make your track the envy of all their friends.

The Hot Wheels Wall Tracks Mid Air Madness is available from a variety of retailers, but is currently only £19.99 at Amazon.

'Colour Me In' With Rice Krispies

We're taking part in the fun Britmums project with Kellogg's Rice Krispies called #ColourMeInRK, and last week we received our pack of the poptastic cereal, along with a bumper colouring case, to get us started.

The Boy's face when he saw the pack of colours was an absolute picture, you'd think he'd just been given a winning lottery ticket! He wanted to dive straight in with the glitter glues, but I managed to restrain him long enough to colour Snap, Crackle and Pop in!

And this is his finished design, not bad for a three year old in my opinion!

Keep an eye on the hash tag #ColourMeInRK on twitter and Instagram for more colourful breakfast boxes! I'm linking this entry up for the BritMums #ColourMeInRK competition, sponsored by Kellogg's.
