Sunday 18th November 2012 – 'Time For SATPIN?' (323/366)

This morning Mr. TBaM was playing Letterpress on his phone when The Boy leant over his shoulder and read out 'MAT'. Surprised, Mr. TBaM typed a few more words along these lines (simple CVC words) and The Boy sounded them all out and read them. All of a sudden, it was like the tools for reading we're just there and understood.

We're amazed. And proud. Very proud.

Home-Made Christmas Tree Decorations

Every year since The Boy was born, we buy him his own special Christmas decoration (to help build up a collection for first adult Christmas tree) and write the year on the bottom of it. I always aim to buy traditional style decorations that have a story to them and he's fascinated by them. This year he's old enough to start making his own decorations and I can't wait to see our Christmas tree filled with his home-made decorations in the future.

You'll need:

  • green felt
  • red felt
  • green or red ribbon
  • green, white and red buttons
  • felt holly leaves and berries (I bought these from Baker Ross)
  • PVA glue
  • scissors

felt decorations

  1. Draw two large circles (one red and one green) and then draw a small inner circle in the middle (I used a large coffee mug rim to draw around).
  2. Cut two smaller circles out of the green felt, and two from the red. These will also need an inner circle, but this must be bigger than the inner circle on the large red or green circle.

Holly wreath decoration:

  1. Cut a 20cm length of ribbon and feed it through the middle of the large green circle, glue it into place and tie the end.
  2. Glue the red circles into place over the ribbon on each side of the large green circle.
  3. Stick holly leaves and berries over the top of the red small circles on both sides and leave to dry.

Button wreath decoration:

  1. Cut a 20cm length of ribbon and feed it through the middle of the large red circle, glue it into place and tie the end.
  2. Glue the green circles into place over the ribbon on each side of the large red circle.
  3. Glue a selection of red, green and white buttons over the small green circles on both sides.

Ecover (Review)

Since The Boy was born, we've used Ecover laundry liquid and conditioner, dishwasher tablets and washing-up liquid. I spent a long time growing and perfecting my son, I'm loathe to taint his precious being with  contaminants. Plus we all have sensitive skin, and the Ecover laundry liquid is the only one that doesn't cause us to break out into rashes or eczema.

Ecover have launched a new range of cleaning products called Zero. Quite simply, they have zero fragrances in them! For those folks who have even more sensitive skin than us, this is perfect as it can help to reduce allergic symptoms. The Zero fragrance-free cleaning products range includes Laundry Liquid, Washing Powder, Fabric Conditioner and Washing Up Liquid; all dermatologically tested.

We were sent some of the Zero non-bio laundry liquid to use and it is fantastic! Fragrance-free and made of gentle plant-based and mineral ingredients, it cleans as well as any other leading detergent. We were also sent some of their multi-action wipes which have an ecological antibacterial agent in them. And very useful they are too with my mucky pup…

I was sent these products for the purpose of this post, my opinions are honest and unbiased.

Country Kids: Goes Stately

This past eleven days for me have been rotten with this food poisoning, and in the last day or so I've really dropped down into the doldrums, especially as it is so cold and grey. I hate being ill (who would honestly say that the like it?!) and I hate not being able to eat comfort food when I'm poorly. I am desperate for a coffee and a mars bar, next week perhaps.

However, Saturday was a beautiful Autumn day and after an incredibly lazy morning, we togged ourselves up into fleeces, scarves, gloves and a bobble hat for The Boy and nipped over to Dyffryn Gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan. Aside from the stunning stately home there, it has amazing Grade I listed gardens divided into secret 'rooms' with extravagant designs, bizarrely placed follies and temples, vegetable gardens and a greenhouse, and an amazing arboreteum.

Dyffryn Gardens is great fun to explore at different times of year, especially Spring and Autumn, but not too often at £7.00 a head! It also unfortunately doesn't allow children to take in scooters which is a huge shame. Apparently a few elderly people complained so everyone has to miss out.

Luckily, The Boy was more than happy to go exploring and we let him lead the way through into new and ever more exciting secret gardens.
