Beach Craft: Driftwood Windchime

We're incredibly fortunate to live on the coast and be able to visit the beach whenever the whim takes us; making memories, gathering treasures, and enjoying the wonders of nature. When we come home it's always time to empty our pockets and examine our prized possessions, debating our latest way of storing them and remembering the fun.

This time we went for a driftwood windchime.

What we used:

  • natural twine
  • driftwood
  • shells with holes in it
  • a hand drill
  • a workbench with a vice
  • a large darning needle

What we did:

  1. Clamp the wood in the vice/workbench and drill holes in the middle of each piece using the hand drill.
  2. Tie a double knot in the end of the string and thread the other end through the darning needle.
  3. Thread through the driftwood and shells alternating between the two.
  4. Tie a large loop in the end and hang on a tree to blow in the warm, Summer breeze.

oh these take me back! We used to make wind chimes with our favourite beach finds in the summer – and then watch them get battered through the winter storms until it was time to make another!

That is exactly what we've done here; our one from last year (different style) finally gave up the ghost about January time in the strong winds.

It's a really simple tool and he loves using it, great for introducing woodwork to children. (I might have half – inched this one from school)

Make sure they've got holes in them! We're forever collecting shells and end up with no idea what to do with them.

What an incredibly creative idea!! I have never seen this done before! We live 10 minutes from Malibu in California. Next time we are at the beach (likely this weekend!), we will have to bring home some of the treasures we find and put something like this together. Great idea, thanks for the share!!

Sometimes it's harder to remember these crafts when it's on your doorstep, we're only five minutes from the beach and often forget about these simple crafts. Thanks for commenting.
