Pebble Pets – Memory Stones

Living by the sea, pebbles are a ready resource and a frequent play resource when we are on the beach. Our local beach is crammed packed full of lovely rounded, grey pebbles; the type that are perfect for painting!

I've had a few pebbles lying around the garden for a while, those that we pick up on the beach and end up making their way home with us but you don't know what to do with. You know the type.

As it so happened, The Boy's first ever pet died a fortnight ago and he was absolutely devastated. The thought of flushing Peppa down the toilet to rejoin her fishy friends in the sea broke his heart, and so he asked to bury her in the garden. We decided to mark this spot with a painted pebble.

Obviously, such a fun activity doesn't need to be done just for such a morbid reason; they're very fun to do normally!

You'll need:

  • acrylic paint (adheres better to the pebble and doesn't flake off easily)
  • pebble
  • small paintbrush
  • a pencil
  • all weather varnish

What to do:

  1. Mark the outline of the shape onto the pebble with pencil.
  2. Paint the base colour on, layer it over several hours once the paint has dried.
  3. Paint the surrounding colours.
  4. Use the acrylic paint as finger paints to imitate the scales of a fish.
  5. Paint the name of the pet on underneath.

Thank you, he was so heartbroken bless him, and the idea of flushing her down the toilet made him near hysterical! He has insisted the replacement Peppa is also called Peppa. Confusing much.
