10th August 2014

We visited Castle Drogo today, a National Trust site near Exeter. It's the last castle built in England, completed in 1930, and yet it still is undergoing some serious structural work taking many years. However, many of the areas indoors are still accessible including 'The Room with The View' upstairs on the top floor. From here you can look down over the ravine in the Drogo estate, where Julius Drewe used to fish in the river.Β

The Boy was desperately peering through the binoculars trying to spot the gap in the woodland which shows the waterfall and the statue of Julius fishing. Unfortunately it was too tricky, despite him trying to 'zoom' in with the binoculars like on my dSLR, so I ended up having to use the Samsung Galaxy Kzoom to show him the section!

That's a beautiful shot. I love images like this – I always wonder what goes through a child's mind when they are staring off into the distance like this.

The photo is quite mediocre in colour, one of those times where B&W saves the day! Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Glad he found the waterfall. It must have been a sight to behold. The photo is fantastic and a great representation of his curiosity. Thank you for sharing!

I did try and help the man next door spot the waterfall but he was having none of it and was most unwelcoming.

The view was one of those things that 2 as magnificent in person but just didn't transfer to a photograph.

I am a little closer to working it out, I think I prefer my Samsung Galaxy S5 because the computer part of it isn't as good on the KZoom. The camera is significantly better but I don't use that all the time, plus I've stopped using my dSLR which is *not* good.

You've captured your shot beautifully and it seems only fitting to be in black and white.
Love the composition and I was interested in reading the details about the last castle.
    Have a lovely Sunday evening

Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. I see what you mean, it does seem fitting to be in black and white, especially as the venue was old.

It definitely did, it was a bit wishy washy in colour. It's amazing how black and white can rescue a photo sometimes.

The Boy was very enchanted with it, if he was a little older (and us a little fitter) it would have been good to take him down to the waterfall.
