Orchard Toys: 'On The Farm' Giant Jigsaw Playmat (Review & Giveaway)

Orchard Toys On The Farm 2

On The Farm is a make and play jigsaw puzzle which can be used as a playmat to explore the environment of a farm. Using the trademark beautiful illustrations, synonymous with Orchard Toys, the large jigsaw puzzle explores many different aspects of farm life including crop growing and keeping livestock.

Measuring approximately 70x85cm, it's a large jigsaw puzzle made up of 14 pieces, the fact that it isn't made up of many pieces makes it a lot easier for younger children to construct which explains the 3+ age rating on it. Younger children would probably be capable of putting the puzzle together but may knock the pieces out of alignment when clambering to reach different parts of it.

on the farm overview

The puzzle features a winding road running through the farmland, with a quaint farmhouse as the central focus, surrounded by a pig sty, field for sheep, crops, barn, duck pond, and a horse's stable and jumps in the field. There are twelve cut-out characters or vehicles (including farm workers or visitors, various animals and a tractor) which have small, plastic stands to help them stand up. The stands were quite stiff and therefore fiddly, needing adult intervention to slot the characters in (spare stands are included in the pack).

The play possibilities with this jigsaw puzzle are immense; there are opportunities for role-play, imaginative play, discussions, story time and language development, and that's on top of the problem-solving and logical thinking that comes from having constructed the puzzle in the first place.

The best bit about the On The Farm puzzle is that it connects up with the Giant Road Jigsaw, which is already a massive hit in this house. At the top of the On The Farm puzzle are two small pieces which end the road quite neatly. However, included in the pack are two connecting pieces which can extend the puzzle using the Giant Road Jigsaw and therefore extend the play possibilities.

on the farm 4

We've had great fun creating a whole world with the two combined puzzles, and now we're just hoping that the development team over at Orchard Toys might create some other scenes in puzzle form which can link up; a park, a village green with shops and houses, or a forest would lead to great fun and many, many hours of play. This is especially true as The Boy can often be found with his Playmobil figures or Hot Wheels cars recreating scenes from books or real life.

On The Farm is available to buy from Orchard Toys for the very reasonable price of £13.95

I don;'t want to enter as we've just reviewed this ourselves but I wanted to say that it was lovely to see The Boy playing with On the Farm and the Giant Road Jigsaw together. I think we are going to get the Giant Road Jigsaw this weekend as someone has given me money to buy Bud a present for his birthday. I'm quite excited!

I'd be a dog. I could eat all I wanted, including the leftovers of the family meals, go out and run about and have boundless energy, I'd get lots of love and cuddles from the family and could make lots of noise if something displeased me. I guess it's the closest I'd get to being a toddler again!
