A Windy Day

While it has been a little gusty here in south Wales today, I'm afraid that I am not talking about the meteorological occurrence.

Burps, plain and simple.

The Boy has always struggled with 'letting go of his wind' (as my mother calls it); not normally a problem in this household. At five days old mum turned up at the door with trusty Infacol, determined it would help. It made a small improvement but he still suffered with trapped wind and colic.

Breastfed babies don't get wind? Bollocks!

When he went onto bottles at three and a half weeks (you know that saga), I used the marvellous Tommee Tippee anti-colic bottles. That helped a bit more, but I was quite relieved when he could try gripe water at a month.

I even went to baby massage when he was five months old. That was no use, he'd just learnt to roll over and therefore wouldn't keep still. (To be perfectly frank, the yummy mummies who went all got on my nerves and so I was quite happy to stop going. There was always something up with their babies, one week it was gastric reflux, the next cranial osteopathy. After the sessions, I would go to my parents' & recount the new fads with a mix of glee & disgust. Plus I couldn't keep a straight face when I was supposed to be massaging The Boy's legs chanting "shimmy, shimmy, shimmy")

Weaning sorted it out a bit more but he still has issues now and again. We do have to occasionally open up a bottle of gripe water on a bad night, what a good job I like the smell of dill. But generally he's much better.

So the point of this post…

Tonight I find myself in The Chair with The Boy who is cuddling Oliver Monkey having just finished his bedtime bottle. He cuddled into my shoulder and the following happens,

Me: Have you got a burp for mummy?
Him: Burp!
Me: No, you can't just say it sweetheart. Try again.
(the sound of him blowing raspberries trying to get a burp out)
Me: ok, never mind, cuddle in and close your eyes. Give mummy a kiss now…

… yes you guessed it.

BURP!

Oh my! Your baby massage sounds similar to mine, I only went once!
We use the anti colic bottles and some times I wish they still put alcohol in gripe water! Is that wrong? Lol
Glad you got a lovely bedtime cuddle!
    Great post as per x

Lol I can't begin to tell you the number of times JW has gazed lovingly at me only to let out a big stinky burp, right in my face. Sometimes it seems he even deliberately turns to face me to do it! Little monkey x

I loved this – so honest and witty post Missus Me.

I went to the Baby Massage classes – don't know why – I'm qualified to piggin well teach them …. social interaction, I think, with other Mum's nearby – waste of time that was!

It is a shame though really, as the HV's might have done the class (small course of 12 weeks, I think, to teach Mums to massage their wriggly babies) but with no/or very little knowledge about complimentary therapies, the skin, history of massage, purpose of the techniques, etc. (need I go on).

I did mine after 2 years of study and practical in both Adv. Sports and Holistic Therapy involving all of the above and anatomy & physiology, understanding & dispensing essential oils. Not boasting, just wondering how, when you are supposed to have knowledge of massage through a qualification, they let the HV's do it for their knowledge of monitoring babies – it's like letting a plumber fix your car!!! I had a nice HV though.

Anyway, I miss my work and would love to go back to client consults, hands on work, aftercare/contraindication advice and the lovely babies – soon my dear, soon, be patient and the lovely physician will mend your dicky hip (when K'Boo is in school, boo hoo – I want it quickly, but want it all to slow down). For pities sake ask me some advice and shut me up, lol.

I always had problems winding B, I was afraid of hurting him for one thing! Used to take me ages sometimes after a bfeed! X

Haha, SO know what you mean about the Yummy Mummy Club, can you imagine what time they must get up to get their hair and make-up done like that?!

We tried Infacol for Sausage and it really didn't agree with her. It barely shifted any wind and turned her into a grizzly, hyperactive tot, it was so weird, but stopped as soon as we stopped giving her it.

Burps in the face – delightful, although after on feed when Noah was only a little baby, my Mum was being silly with him and lifted above her head only for him to puke in her mouth! Now that's love!!

I never had really bad colic babies so was very lucky, but there were a few time that the wind just would not come up and it makes it a hard work night!. x

    Very funny post x

Nice! My 7 and 9 year olds have just learnt to burp the alphabet and are now practicing with the words to Justin Bieber songs. I think it's an improvement.

Ah bless him, what makes me laugh is when they are little we always say "good boy/girl" and encourage them to burp, then we spend the rest of their childhood years telling them it's rude and they must say 'pardon'!!

Oh burps how I love them! It's like baby poo. "has he burped? How many times?" you start getting obsessed with it!

Shimmy shimm? haha!! 🙂 I've been once and thankfully no shimmying goings on. I seemed to be the only one looking like a bag lady though and was 15 minutes late. The rest already massaging their ultra calm babies whilst my little wriggler was everywhere!

I stopped going after 3 sessions, The Boy wouldn't lie still enough for me to take part. The baby massage teacher now comes to Monkey Music in the same group as The Boy and I can still sense her disapprovement as he takes an active part and her docile child just sits nicely on her lap.

I too have had the burp in the face experience – it's lovely isn't it?! Luckily, Baby Badger only had really bad wind once, for about a week, and it turned out to be a bad latch: she'd grown and the way I was holding her didn't work any more.
